It seems that if it’s August and you want to avoid all things Rick Pitino related in college basketball, you have to turn to the recruiting scene. We’ll start with the National Hoops Report blog that looks at the most significant commits thus far in August-the most noteworthy piece from my perspective is the class that Thad Matta’s putting together for 2010. It makes one think of the Oden-Conley-Cook-Lighty class that went to the national title game as freshmen:

ESPN updated their Top 100 list and by my count the Gophers are in pursuit of players #1, 24, 30, 34, 36, 49, 89, and 97 on the list (I could have missed someone though). They also followed up with an article that gave an overview of some of the players on the list, including #97, Gophers target Alex Kirk.

Looking for a sleeper in the incoming freshman class? It could be Gonzaga’s Mangisto Arop who had an eye-opening tournament at the Nike Global Challenge while playing for Canada. This blog by a Zags fan is a bit pie-in-the-sky, but nevertheless he sounds like a talent to be aware of.

I’ll be away from the computer tomorrow, so we’ll see you again on Monday with a fresh Skinny. Enjoy the weekend and just think-we’re less than a month away from TCF Stadium’s debut.
