As Blue Bloods get their number one guys in the portal and people like PP get pushed aside, is there any chance on a return?

I mean, we had to offer PP some kind of NIL, what if the other offers dry up and Dinkytown starts to look like a safe landing spot again.

Thoughts?

If Carrington asked to come back but was told to go pound sand, how would Johnson differentiate Carrington's situation from Payne's? If the three Minnesota kids were all in a similar boat and all three were unhappy at best or malcontents at worst, I would think/hope that Johnson would handle the same.

Well, that's an interesting analogy but I'm not sure it's a really close match to the situation. Like the gangsters say "This isn't personal. It's just business." What you have described above is personal and in that situation, I would say "no." But, I suspect that Payne's decision is mostly business in that he wanted to try for more money than what was available here. If he's willing to come back and accept what is available for him here, then I think saying "no" out of some sense of being spurned may not be the right business decision.

Agree 100%.

If he came back (not expecting that) I would have zero concerns about Payne's work ethic and attitude. Carrington (commitment), I wouldn't have the same confidence. Ben knows he's being paid to win games. Payne very much so can still help him do that.

The longer he sits out there, the more attactive coming back will look. Most lists I have found don't have him top 50, some not even top 75. Several other Bigs rated higher than him currently with two weeks to go before the portal closes, plus those entering in the three weeks leading up to May 1 are doing so because they have been "replaced" by a new player coming from the portal, and he still hasn't moved much on his ranking.

Questions might be, is the NIL offer to play here still available, and would Ben take him back?
 

Kind of feel like this topic has been well covered in the other 4 threads related to Payne and the other guys transferring out.....but what do I know. :)

On the subject of Carrington, I would like to see another guard/wing of some quality recruited in this offseason and, if that happens, I certainly wouldn't mind seeing Carrington return as a 5th or 6th guard if he needs the scholarship and he's not having much luck in the portal.
 

He's visiting Texas and Texas A&M. If he still does not have a commitment after that then there may be a possibility, highly doubt full though.

Can she box out, block shots, score well and play defense?
 

Weren't we told he was a malcontent along with tbe other guys who left? You think he will have a better attitude now after getting spurred?

I never bought the Sid Hartman "Guy leaving was a cancer" bs anyways so I am all for his return.

Easy - Payne is a way better basketball player and Carrington pulled BS during the season.

It really comes down to Payne being a much better player and in the new era of college basketball being professional-light, that's all that matters.

Bad analogy. These kids do not make a lifetime commitment before god and family. Plus, many couples reconcile after extramarital affairs. A more relevant question would be: Would you take back an employee after they quit? My answer would be that it depends on HOW and why they left.

However, I very much think it is a moot point. He ain’t coming back.
 

Take him if he wants to come back, but DTA should definitely lower what they were offering the first time. He refused that offer because he thought he could get a better one somewhere else, no way that should still be on the table. Use the difference to give to those who stayed to start with.

Revenge sounds fun. Having a good basketball team would be better. By all means take him back with full pay if he were to come back. No brainer.
 

I'm in the camp that if a player enters the portal, that's a one-way trip. The reason being if you take them back, then every player gets the message of "Since there's no downside, I'll give the portal a go" and expect a welcome back card if they change their mind. If you let all your players do that, it'd create complete chaos down the road (okay, exceptions to the rule for needing to move back home because mom is sick and such, but you get the idea).

Also, I do wonder if PP is having some serious second thoughts. On this board people say he wouldn't make it in the NBA, but I doubt he thinks that. Being a backup on a blue-blood team doesn't give him nearly as good of a chance of making it onto a pro team as does being a key cog in what could be a pretty decent Gopher's team next year. He could have put up some really nice stats on the Gophers. In a real sense, trying to cash in on NIL next year could significantly hurt his chances of making it onto a pro team roster the following year. All depends on where he lands...

I would have agreed with you but now that Frank Mitchell has committed I'm not so sure. Save what money we have left for some other players.
 

Payne is visiting Texas. Texas just had Dillon Mitchell enter the portal. I haven’t seen a lot of him but aren’t they very similar? Mitchell being the Skinny Payne?

Is Payne gonna get paid, but not enough for Mitchell?
 

Of all of the players that entered the portal this year, Payne is by far the most painful. Hometown kid with great upside. Was developing probably ahead of schedule. Had some great moments/games this year. And he is at our #1 position of need (a Center). All that considered, I am 60/40 on him coming back. Having been an employer for 26 years, I can tell you that it is generally true that once an employee wants to leave, they are gone forever. But...I would still offer Payne an open door.

Unfortunately.....just based on what I've read here.....he burned the bridge. Don't see how Johnson allows him back on the team.

No one who is talking really knows what happened in the locker room. What really happened would be the core of the data to decide whether Carrington is welcome back. One of Richard's wisest moves in his tenure was deep sixing Dorsey after the pornography scandal and not the others. He clearly understood who the ring leader was and made sure he was gone. (Dorsey never got another scholarship as far as I know and he could play, so Richard knew what he was doing.)

If Ben knows that Carrington was at the center and pulled the rest with him, there could be justification for telling him to pound sand and not Payne. If all three together decided they were undervalued by the program and pouted, none of them can come back. If they did, Ben would likely lose the locker room.

Right. We don't know how it all went down. And we don't know how/if a conversion happened between Johnson and Carrington since the portal announcements. My thoughts are that if it is true that Carrington asked to rejoin the team and Johnson said no.....then Carrington caused some big problems.
