2014 Fired Coaches Watch Thread: 3/20 Wake, Auburn, BC, VT, Wazzu all fired

Just throwing this out there.

California has strong interest in Xavier's Chris Mack as its new basketball coach, multiple sources told ESPN.com on Thursday.

Mack, 44, has led the Musketeers to the NCAA tournament in four of his five seasons since taking over for Sean Miller in 2009. Mack took Xavier to the Sweet 16 in 2010 and 2012.

Bears coach Mike Montgomery retired earlier this month after six seasons in Berkeley. The 67-year-old had previously been a head coach at Montana, Stanford and in the NBA with the Golden State Warriors. He has publicly pushed for his assistant, Travis DeCuire, to get the job.

California was 21-14 this past season and will lose seniors Justin Cobbs and Richard Solomon.

CBS: Former NBA coach Eric Musselman has interviewed twice with California

While Xavier's Chris Mack remains a candidate at California, multiple sources told CBSSports.com on Friday that former NBA coach Eric Musselman has interviewed with school officials on two different occasions about replacing Mike Montgomery as the Bears' men's basketball coach.

Oh goodie. We can look forward to bi-weekly updates on his every move from Charley Walters and friends. He's the Marc Trestman of basketball.

Interesting that Musselman resigned his Arizona State post without having his next job lined up. I read where he was the other finalist for the South Florida job that went to Calipari's top assistant Orlando Antingua. I am not sure the exact circumstances, but I believe Musselman was also loosely connected to the Gopher job last Spring. If I remember correctly he was going to be in our next batch of interviews and was planning to fly to Florida when Norwood decided on Richard Pitino.

I think he'd make a really nice hire for someone, but I would think he'd be a tougher sell at California where people might be more apt to remember his rocky one year stint as head coach of the Kings.

Would love to see Hoiberg jump to the NBA. Seems like there has been some legit buzz about offers coming his way. Hopefully he jumps at them.

Maine finally figures it out, fires Woodward

I can no longer track a DI coaching statistic I've always found amazing. ...

Ted Woodward didn't win a conference tournament game from 2006-2014 (9 straight seasons, 10 straight conference tourney losses), but it took until today for the University of Maine to get rid of him. For completely trash-canning a program that current La Salle coach Dr. John Giannini had built into a perennial America East contender, Woodward will receive a nice $113,800 parting gift.

Did you go to Maine, I've learned everything I know about Maine hoops from you, just curious about it

Nope. Brother lives out there so I started to take some interest in the Black Bears. Let's just say basketball isn't a priority at Maine! They're more of a stick & puck kinda' university, and if every other team sucks, so be it.

They've really struggled in hockey the last few years too so I'm not sure that they really have any athletics going real well for them right now.

I dont know, but if you've never been to Maine, you're missing out. Beautiful scenery, food, and weather. Its like Northern Minnesota all over the damn place but with Lobster Rolls....

I've never been there but have heard it is a great place to visit especially in the fall.

I went last summer and caught some fallish weather (go figure) and it was amazing. If you like seafood get out there. I do a lot of business in Vermont and have been out there as well. East Coast is nice.

Love visiting Maine for the reasons mentioned above, but would never want to live there.

Tennessee's Cuonzo Martin is expected to be announced as California's new head coach. Replaces Montgomery...Will Gregg Marshall be swayed to head to Tn?

How long before Doogie tweets Tennessee is interested in young Richard?

What's the afternoon deadline for Doogie? Also, wonder if Tn. has a player we need next year at the 4 and 5 positions? Looks like Kingsley Okoroh 7'0" is a 2 star for the 5. CJ Turman is 6'9" for the 4/5 and Phil Cofer is a sweet 6'7" PF. Scratch off Okoroh!!! he's heading to Cal.

volnation forum already is suggesting our coach as a potential replacement. They really want Gregg Marshall though...and of course, Shaka

Maybe I'm a homer but I'd be pretty surprised if Richard left for the Tennessee job.

Over/under is 18 hours. I have no idea where his wife is from, but Tennessee is probably closer! And I bet she's not fond of -20 too!

You can't leave after one year in for Tennessee. Your alma mater? Or Louisville? OK. Not Rocky Top.

South Florida has reportedly offered UNLV's Dave Rice it's head coaching position. (vaughn anyone?)

Wake Forest is reportedly interested in Tubby Smith and Danny Manning for its head coaching position.
http://insider.espn.go.com/mens-col...e-boston-college-wake-forest-washington-state

Boston College is reportedly holding out hope for Tommy Amaker. If he declines, it sounds like Mike Hopkins is their man. Other candidates apparently include: Mark Schmidt and Walter McCarty (yes, former NBA player). Jim Calhoun is no longer interested.
http://www.bcinterruption.com/boston-col...im-calhoun
Calhoun's interest was based on an incorrect understanding that recruiting rules were optional at all current and former BigEast schools.

Thought this was funny, check out the dates on the tweets

Volnation was losing their minds over this yesterday on the forum. They essentially said Martin went to Arizona to seal the deal on him Monday, accepted the job at Cal on Tuesday and the turn happened...all on U of T's dime.

per the Tulsa World:

Also on Tuesday, a source said there may have been dialogue involving TU and former Hurricane coach Tubby Smith, and that New Mexico State coach Marvin Menzies may now be a candidate.

In his first season at Texas Tech, the 62-year-old Smith reportedly was paid $1.8 million. In March, Smith was in the Reynolds Center as he and members of TU’s 1993-94 team were honored. Smith became emotional during the ceremony. The Hurricane coach in 1991-95, he twice took Tulsa to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen.
