2014-2015 Gopher Women's Season Thread!

They attempt way too many 3's. That's practically all Bailey shoots (0-6 last night). They usually shoot close to 50% on 2's. I know Stollings game is run and gun, but I think they need to slow it down a bit and take higher percentage shots.

Bailey averages 9 3PT attempts per game (she would help the team by cutting that number in half). For someone who is supposedly a 3-point specialist, 28% 3PT seems very poor, especially since she's getting wide open looks most of the time. To her credit, she's the best option at position and rebounds well. Works hard.

Last night's game was a microcosm of the season. They were terrific at times, and at other times they lacked energy and looked tired. They defended decently down the stretch of the game, but for most of the night the defense was porous.

Their defense just isn't that strong. Going to have to live with that. The team will really miss Shae Kelley next year, she does things well (e.g., drive) that no one else on the team does well.

Do any of you have a clue? Shae can drive. Big deal.

Borton left us with 5 or 6 players. That is all. Coach will build depth so we do not haffta complain about individuals when what is needed is MORE DEPTH!!!

Coach will get us there.

Last night was closer than I cared for but you have to love the fact that they had players step up in crunch time. Also, I think Stollings tweaked the defense at times last night to try and slow their, paticularly Bays, from getting the ball in rhythm at the high post. There were a number of times where AZB ended up on the wing where you normally find Kelly, while Kelly was toward the top of the middle of the zone in order to get more size in that spot. Didn't necessarily work as that sometimes left Baley or McDaniel guarding the low block. That really hurt during the stretch in the 2nd half when Purdue scored down low against Baley.

I will be curious to see what kind of energy they can bring tonight. I hope the heavy minutes played by the starters don't translate to sluggishness. Would also really love to see a bounce back game from Wagner. Even though she's just freshman she seems like the type who won't allow herself to struggle for too long.

Wow, what a bunch of loser comments. Go back under your rock.

When Wagner gets her feet set/in rythem, she will shoot a good 75% from 3.

Too many forced shots and passes.

Good coach is resting some players. OSU didn't play yesterday.

Mikayla Bailey can't buy a three. It brings some serious rain down with it, and she releases it from left side of her body, which really leaves the end location of the ball to complete chance. Not the time for her to keep trying. Zahui's really being equalized out there, so she needs to make adjustments now in order to become effective once again like early in the game. Defensively, they have to cover Mitchell and Hart like glue (earlier said than done though).

Throwing up a beyond-half court prayer with 9 seconds still left in the half pretty much sums up the game so far for the Gophers. Dumb basketball being played. No execution. Has to dramatically change in the 2nd half for the girls to change things around.

Wagner definitely bounced back shooting wise. Her passing is really rough though. Maybe not surprising given she was expected to shoot all the time in high school. Mullaney really off tonight as well.

I would love watching Mitchell if she weren't playing us. She has incredible variety to her game.

The way the Gophers play makes you want to tear you hair out at times. Tonight is one of those nights. This is literally unwatchable. Proud of what they've done during the season as a whole though and hopefully they can have a competitive showing in the NCAA Tournament. This is a big milestone for the program. Just waiting for Monday now.

Meh. Frustrating but nowhere near that frustrating. We're playing a quicker team with a deeper bench on back to back. It happens.

I definitely get how tough the defensive responsibilities have been tonight. On the other hand, the turnovers, missed layups, poor shot selection, etc have been really frustrating. Offensively, the Gophers have been their own worst enemies, which as a fan you hate to see.

Yep, not fun at all.

Right now I'm really mad about the flop by their post when AZB grabbed the rebound. Complete BS!

Really shows the weakness(s) of this team.

1. No Bench: Really only 5 players getting minutes.

2. Free Throws: You get free throws by taking the ball to the basket. Our guards aren't quick/athletic enough to blow by the defender.........Mullaney a little.

FT's
Zahui B - 10
Kelley - 11
Mullaney - 2
rest of team - 0

Edit: Hirt has really done a nice job coming off the bench. I'm a little surprised she hasn't gotten more minutes.

Ya, as physical as they were with AZB, that was laughable. Got to admire the way they had their bigs get down the court. Amanda couldn't keep up with that pace.

This conference might be brutal next year. Maryland has damn near everyone back. Ohio State's best two players are freshmen. Northwestern loses only one real contributor. Sure hope the newcomers are good and are ready to play because getting Banham back alone won't make that much of a difference with losing Kelly and the weaknesses of this year.

Didn't think they would play well in back to back games. Tired legs leads to mistakes. Period, end of story.

If ever a team desperately needs the long break before the NCAA tournament, this is that team.

Gophers women will use break to repair their flaws

HOFFMAN ESTATES, ILL. – All they can do now is wait. Though Gophers women’s coach Marlene Stollings believes her team has done enough to secure an invitation to the NCAA women’s basketball tournament, she won’t know its fate until March 16, when the field is announced.

But the Gophers won’t be idle over the next eight days. After taking a bit of time to rest and recharge, they will try to repair the flaws in their game that hastened their exit from the Big Ten tournament. The first order of business will be to fortify an uneven defense that has allowed an average of 84 points over the past three games, including an 83-71 loss to Ohio State in Friday’s tournament quarterfinals at the Sears Centre.
