Doogie: "There are a ton of tickets left for the Oregon State game"

A "ton" of tickets - sounds like we are only 2K away from a sellout...not too bad. Or it could just be that a "professional" journalist was inaccurate with his language. As far as the State Fair goes - seriously...is that really still a draw for the non 'mouth-breathers?' I would think that would impact the Vikings game more than anything...Gopher fans tend to have a college education at least.

Where did you hear it's only 2K away from a sellout?

I think low attendance is just something that we're going to have to deal with this year, at least early on. A lot of factors are coming together: bad record last year, higher ticket prices, new Vikings stadium, and a pretty bland home schedule this year. This year is a pivotal year for many factors, and if we can capitalize on our easier schedule this year, we shouldn't have many problems filling the stadium towards the end of the season and into next year.

Going to go out on a limb here and say you missed the sarcasm.

But on a more serious note: how many tickets do you think have been sold?

Over/Under 35,000?

Please review last years victories. BT opener JK lost his mud and it was pretty much down hill after that.

Why? It's one of the most popular events in the state... if anything blame the Gophers for scheduling a game when the State Fair is going on, they know people are going to choose the Fair over a non-conf game.

Irrational and irrelevant argument. The Fair and the game only overlap 2-3 hours during a nearly two week long schedule. The Fair/Gopher game argument needs to go away. Even the parking issue is a non factor as most daytime fair attendees leave before 6 o'clock. Stop using a theory that has no basis in fact.

Yes, dpodoll. I'm hoping Mark Coyle sees what a rinky-dinky department this is. We've the Carlson School of Business and yet we can't find a shining star in sales and marketing. You've a 19℅ drop in season ticket sales and yet the U of M has come up with nothing other than the weak 2 pack promotion. It is absolutely BS.

Interesting that you say that. I graduated from Carlson and as far as I know there is little/no interaction between the Carlson school its students and the Sports Mktg. department. I did an internship with Gopher Sports Marketing during my sophomore year there, and of the 80ish interns I think I was the only one in Carlson.

I've never thought about it much before, but it seems like a huge miss for the Sports Marketing department to be that far removed from the University's best business students.

That would be par for the course. The school that loses money selling beer!

A fish rots from the head.
It is my opinion that if Kaler had one wish it would be that the whole AD just vanish.

Doogie: "There are a ton of tickets left for the Oregon State game"

I'll summarize it this way....
If you like the State Fair then I don't want you at a Gopher Game.

I kinda like the State Fair. We usually go Friday or Saturday after Gophers. But why anyone goes more than once per summer is beyond me.

I always go to hear Sid and the Gopher players, and see the marching band. See, you can be on brand.

And what figment of your imagination are you basing this on?

Kaler has been one of the most athletically engaged U of M Presidents ever.

I mean, he's been here since 2011, so it's clearly his fault that the Gophers haven't won a conference title since 1967. It was his decision to move the team to the Metrodome in the 1980s. He even gave Jerry Kill epilepsy! Damn him and his desire to eliminate the athletic department!

Yeah it seems like Kaler is pretty supportive. Not at all sure why anyone would doubt his support.

IMO Kaler does seem to recognize that athletics and major sports are the front porch to the University's house. He has been supportive.

Signing off on shovels in the ground for new athletic facilities when fundraising was about 70-80 million short and doubling the base salary of the new athletic director compared to the previous athletic director certainly proves your point.

I think Kaler wants a competitive programs across the board, but there is only so many things he can do. Minneapolis isn't an isolated college town where everything revolves around the school like every other program in the big ten. There a lot of powerful people in the Twin Cities who want to see our programs fail. Why do you think the media spends so much time running down J. Robinson based on much more than rumors from an anonymous source.

I think Kaler wants a competitive programs across the board, but there is only so many things he can do.

Also the dude just might have other stuff to do (rumor has it the university does a lot of things)... and I'm pretty sure he's not eligible to play.

Kaler threw down money on an AD, it's the AD's job to get the $, Ws, etc.

enough people to go the State Fair,Vikings game,Twins, and the Gophers. I think a bigger deterrent is the BTN. Easier to stay home plus the beer is cheaper.

The State Fair is the Minnesota way. I've always thought that had they held a flea market in the
Dome it would've drawn 60,000 or more. The people in this State love to do knucklehead things.
Look at the Native American casino's. The same person who show's up at a garage sale and try to give you .25 cents for a .50 cent item will drop half his paycheck on the slots. They will also drop 25 dollars on the Midway at the Fair on shooting baskets with a undersize rim to win a 5.00 stuffed toy.

I really enjoy the state fair. We for sure go once, sometimes even twice a year (the 2nd time usually involves a concert or going with friends). I would never let the state fair be the reason I don't go to a Gopher game though. The fair runs for almost 2 weeks - you can plan around a Gopher game.

You are being overly possessive.

"Athletically engaged", perhaps engaged with the athletic department is what you meant.
The Teague hiring was his decision.

Your first sentence makes no sense.

What does the second sentence have to do with your previous post? In what way does that support your statement that he wants the athletic department to vanish?

Garage sale chiselers are the worst. I have had one garage sale in my life and they basically turned me off to ever having another one ever again.

As Fred Sanford's sign said "We buy junk and sell antiques."
