Gopher Softball - 2016

No outfield putouts today. 5 k's 7 grounders and 3 infield pop flies.

The only action was to Wenner in the 5th. It was an error that led to RU's only run.

Wow, good catch! (no pun intended) Although I think that was Fabian that misplayed the ball in right field in the 5th.

My bad. Anderson allowed 2 ball to the outfield in the 5th inning. The rest of the time the outfielders could have been daydreaming.

B1G Standings with the contenders remaining conference games. Bold is home.

Michigan 11-2 (1 Michigan State, 3 Maryland, 3 Penn State, 3 Rutgers)
Minnesota 11-3 (3 Nebraska, 3 Maryland, 3 Iowa)
Penn State 11-3 (3 Iowa, 3 Michigan, 3 Illinois)
Ohio State 9-4-1 (3 Purdue, 3 Indiana, 3 Michigan State)
Nebraska 9-5 (3 Minnesota, 3 Purdue, 3 Wisconsin)
Wisconsin 8-5-1 (3 Illinois, 3 Northwestern, 3 Nebraska)
Northwestern 7-7
Indiana 6-8
Purdue 6-8
Illinois 5-9
Michigan State 4-9
Maryland 3-9
Rutgers 2-10
Iowa 2-12

That Nebraska series will be tough for the Gophers. Couple of real good hitters in Stokes and Knighten and Cassie McClure was able to beat Michigan 1-0 in their series.

RPI for B1G teams. Bold are the remaining Gopher opponents. (Can I still whine about those Wisconsin losses? Didn't have to play Michigan, Ohio State or Penn State. Just had to take care of business.)

Michigan 2 and ranked 2 in both polls
Minnesota 22 and ranked 21 in both polls. Moving up one.
Nebraska 30
Ohio State 34 and ranked 23 in the ESPN poll.
Northwestern 48
Indiana 50
Illinois 53
Wisconsin 67
Purdue 76
Penn State 84
Michigan State 99
Rutgers 129
Iowa 175
Maryland 188

Wenner gives the Gophers a 1-0 lead with a 2nd inning solo shot.
Gophers guilty of squandering scoring chances in both the 1st and 2nd innings.
Fabian puts the Gophers up 3-0 with a 2 run blast in the 4th inning.
Gophers put another one on the board as Houlihan drives in Rozell who was running for Groenewegen and took 2 bases on a wild pitch. A nifty head first slide into 3rd base to avoid the tag by Rozell.
Gophers add a couple more to make it 6-0 heading into the top of the 6th.
Minnesota takes the opener 6-0 behind a 1 hitter by Groenewegen.

B1G Results from Friday

Gophers over Nebraska 6-0.
Rutgers beat Indiana 8-3. (Scarlet Knights on a 3 game win streak after 6 straight losses.)
Illinois beat Wisconsin 4-3. (Good)
Michigan handles Maryland 9-1. (Just don't see the Gophers catching Michigan.)
Purdue puts down Ohio State 3-1. (Provides a little more separation from the Buckeyes.)
Penn State keeps rolling with a 8-3 win over Iowa. (Next weekend Michigan visits Penn State and the seeding for the tourney will become much clearer if Wolverines handle them like I'm assuming. But then again, you know the old adage....)
Northwestern shuts out Michigan State 8-0. (Every few games the Wildcats put some serious numbers up on the scoreboard.)

Guessing Allister goes with Anderson today with Dwyer back at shortstop (although Groenewegen only threw 72 pitches in her outing). In their last couple series Nebraska has been going with Jablonski in the second game. In 77.1 innings, the right handed sophomore has given up 90 hits and 39 base on balls. Also seems to give up the home runs, 17 of them.

Allister goes with Groenewegen in the circle to start.
Nebraska scores 1 in the top of the first. Taylor LeMay hits a 2 run homer in the bottom of the first to give the Gophers a 2-1 lead.
Nebraska reclaims the lead off a Knighten 2 run homer in the third. 3-2 now.
Groenewegen chased from the circle in this one. Gophers down 5-2.
Palkovich hits one out in the bottom of the fourth to narrow it to 5-3.
Wenner hits one out right after Palkovich. 5-4 now.
A Fabian double drives in Dwyer, who had singled, to tie it up.
Macken doubles in Fabian and the Gophers lead 6-5.
Groenewegen with a grand slam to make it 10-5.
With the score now 10-6 and a runner on second with no outs in the sixth inning, Groenewegen takes the ball again. Nebraska already had made the same move with their starter today.
Now 10-7 with a runner on second and the top of the Nebraska order up with one out.
Gophers get out of the inning with the help of some lousy base running by Nebraska. Tried to advance on a pop foul that was caught.
Geeze, Nebraska ties it up with a 3 run homer in the top of the 7th. Unbelievable. Sara G throwing batting practice in this one.
Groenewegen drives in another run with two outs in the 7th to win it 11-10.
Whew!

B1G Results for Saturday

Gophers with a hard fought 11-10 win over Nebraska.
Michigan all over Maryland 16-0.
Ohio State edged Purdue 3-2.
Northwestern beat Michigan State 4-2.
Wisconsin over Illinois 4-1.
Iowa defeats Penn State 4-1. That is good news.
Rutgers over Indiana 6-3.

Does anyone know why they didn't play 2 yesterday? This forecast had been known for a while.

Michigan doesn't look like they are going to lose. Those 2 losses to Sconnie sunk us.

Michigan over Penn State today 12-0.

So only Michigan left after Sunday?
No Michigan series this year. Iowa is the only series left. Gophers will end up in the opposite bracket from Michigan in the tourney (Unless they have a total collapse at Iowa). Hopefully they meet in the finals.

Gophers go with Groenewegen in the circle.
Take a 2-0 lead after 1 inning.
Groenewegen goes through the order once with no hits and 7 strikeouts. Gophers lead 3-0 going into the bottom of the 3rd.
Anderson, the Senior, replaces Groenewegen in the 5th with the Gophers up 9-0.
Gophers sweep the Terps winning 9-0.

B1G Standings

Michigan 18-2
Minnesota 16-3
Penn State 13-7
Ohio State 12-7-1
Northwestern 12-8
Nebraska 11-8
Wisconsin 10-9-1
Illinois 10-10
Indiana 8-12
Purdue 8-12
Rutgers 8-12
Michigan State 6-14
Iowa 3-17
Maryland 3-17

The final series for the Gophers is @ Iowa
The final series for Michigan is hosting Rutgers. Looks like Minnesota is assured of, at the least, 2nd place. That will give them a match up with the winner of seed number 7 and 10. (Same as last year.)

Wonder.if we get a Regional?

Would have to go with no.

This is from an article a couple of years ago. They go almost exclusively on RPI and Gophers are way too deep. Currently sitting at #21. So, even if they sweep lowly Iowa, not going to move up much. Not sure how far they would they move up if they were to win the tourney. (I will try to figure how much they gained when they won it a couple of years ago.)

Let's start with the 16 national seeds. Since 2007, which is when available RPI data begin, teams ranked in the top 16 of the final pre-selection RPI accounted for 105 of 112 national seeds. Only once in that span did a team ranked No. 20 or lower in the RPI earn a national seed (Long Beach State in 2008). That could be a hurdle for the Big Ten this season, as co-champs Michigan (18) and Nebraska (19), as well as Minnesota (17), are all currently on the outside looking in.

They were sitting right around #17 before they won the B1G tournament in 2014. (If my research is correct. Duh, it says it right in the article. LOL, I'm kind of slow. In the selection RPI the Gophers were #16. So they must have grabbed the final regional spot.)

A week ago the NCAA released their Top Ten rankings. The big thing is being in the top 8 in this ranking. That will get the team a host spot for a regional and a super regional (if they make it through the regional). Official bracket comes out May 15.

1. Florida (45-3)
2. Michigan (37-4)
3. Oklahoma (38-7) Beaten twice by the Gophers, once in Las Vegas and the other was in Norman.
4. Auburn (45-5)
5. Alabama (41-9)
6. James Madison (40-3)
7. Oregon (35-6)
8. Florida State (38-5) Beat the Gophers twice in the B1G/ACC Challenge, 5-4 and 2-0 in Tallahassee.
9. Washington (30-10) Beat the Gophers 7-2 in Las Vegas.
10. La.-Lafayette (35-6)

Side note. Three B1G players were drafted this year.
Sierra Romero of Michigan went #2 overall.
Kiki Stokes of Nebraska went #6.
Sara Driesenga of Michigan went #27.

RPI just came out.

Michigan #2
Minnesota #22
Nebraska #32
Ohio State #33
Northwestern #46
Illinois #47
Indiana #67
Purdue #69
Penn State #77
Wisconsin #78
Michigan State #116
Rutgers #118
Iowa #180
Maryland #183

To have a chance at a regional here, we'll need to beat Michigan in the Big Ten tournament. Better even if we can beat them twice. Probably won't happen, but we're good enough to win a regional elsewhere. Well, that is if we can get someone else to show up at pitching...

Unfortunately, the BTT in softball is single-elimination, which means only 1 shot at Michigan. The Gophers will be a #2 seed at a regional somewhere. Probably at a 9-16 seed.

WTH? Why wouldn't it be just like baseball and be double elimination? Makes for an epic Sunday when it can be two teams playing twice. Weird.
