Paul Chryst poised to return to UW as head coach, according to source

Gary Andersen was 13-3 in Big Ten play.

Paul Chryst's record in 3 seasons at Pitt is mediocre.

I get that Chryst is a nice guy and probably likely to look at Wiscy as a destination job. But how exactly is this being termed an automatic upgrade?
One was coaching at Pitt

The other was coaching at Wisconsin...

Is Jerry Kill better than Chryst?

Probably the best choice for WI. He knows the area, Barry, etc. He's been underwhelming as a head coach so far, that would be my only concern if I were a WI fan. The program didn't improve under him.

Agreed, but their records say they are about the same, so by logic presented on this board.....

Kill's teams get better every year. Chryst teams didn't get better at all in 3 years even though he recruited pretty well.

I don't buy 'but it was just Pitt'. Pitt has had more recent success than the Gophers.

woah... I'm not saying Chryst is better than Kill. I'm saying records do not equate coaching acumen.

Love this post on ESPN by a Pitt fan in response to a Wisconsin fan saying if you're looking at the 19-19 record at Pitt, you're clueless.

Jeremy Martin
You must have not followed Pitt. They may actually be worse off now than the day he took over. No talent at qb, defense stinks, and the two players that carried them Boyd and Conner will be gone after this next season. You're out of your mind if you think he's a good coach. Don't even get me started on the guys charisma.

Kill at Minnesota: 25-26

25-25, actually. Where are you getting this mythical loss from?

Minnesota's record during the 4 years previous to Kill: 17-33 (Kill currently at +2 wins per season more than predecessors, could be even higher after bowl game)
Pittsburgh's record during the 3 years previous to Chryst: 24-15 (Chryst finishes at -1.67 wins per season less than predecessors)

Also, Pittsburgh won 10 games once during the 3 years prior to Chryst, and also won a conference championship.

So - yeah, their respective .500 records are basically the same thing.

Bit of a difference in conferences. If J/K was coaching in the ACC he would have better than a .500 record. Heck I think his record against ACC teams was better than .500 at Northern Illinois.

decent coach but not a genius by any means.

+1. The fact that badgerdoc tossed it out is wishful thinking & the term is overused.

Honestly, I didn't mind the thought of Chryst as coach when the Gophers were hiring & thought it was a joke that he was automatically being dismissed because he didn't have head coaching experience, the same way that I said it was a joke that the U wouldn't consider Guz Malzahn for the same reason. But he definitely may be someone who's simply just a better coordinator than a head coach. Some good coordinators can make the transition (Malzahn, Mark Richt); some good coordinators struggle (Muschamp)

Not a shock. When you lose 2 coaches in 24 months because the AD insists on being a part of the daily running of the football program then said AD is going to hire a "yes" man that knows the deal going in. Paul Chryst fits that mold perfectly. He won't be surprised by Barry's meddling in the team since he owes his career to that man.

Whether that means Chryst will be a good coach remains to be seen. I'm not ready to call it an upgrade/downgrade at this point. The proof will be in the pudding.

Lets hope this is more Lane Kiffin (inexplicably given more chances at HC than that pissant ever deserved) or Muschamp.

The level of angst from Pitt fans will probably tell the story. Do Pitt fans care that much, Hari Kari on the forums, etc as it would be if Kill left?

Surprising that he recruited as well as he did in Pitt and still had little success. That experience could be a great help for recruiting the area to Wisconsin. So we can assume that Barry got the waiver to not have to post the STATE job for 14 days.

I wouldn't say Chryst owes his career to Alvarez - he played at UW pre-Barry, and only spent two years working together. If anything, Mike Riley is who got Chryst on the fast track in college football - Chryst was a member of Riley's staff at Oregon State twice, and was with Riley in the NFL, totaling seven years.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel writer must be pretty plugged in. He called Chryst right away. Looking at this thread and Pittsburgh boards, sounds like Chryst earned high marks as a Coordinator, an incomplete as a head coach and an D-F as a recruiter. Though looking at his present "Committed" list, the "stars" don't look that bad.

The business side of College Football is tough to handicap.

Looking at his staff, he should be able to bring most along and not miss a beat in recruiting. Many of his guys have ties to the Midwest. Pretty much all his top recruits over the years were from Pennsylvania. Will be interesting to see if that translates to WI. He mostly recruited in the bottom 1/2 to 1/3 of the ACC.

Can someone skilled in the "graphic arts" please put together an image with Chryst as the ventriloquist dummy on Barry's knee? That might be the best thing ever...

Recruiting is always the question. I think that's the only remaining question I have on Kill and it will be a question for Chryst. Seems to me I read something somewhere when Chryst was being considered for our job post-Brewster that Chryst didn't enjoy recruiting. I honestly don't know if that's true or not (and I'm so old I may have imagined the whole thing).

If the Badgers hired God as their football coach, doom and gloom and the downfall of the program woukd be predicted on this board.

Who knows how Chryst will do, but the hire makes a lot of sense for many reasons. It is fumny how all the Gophers insiders on this board know exactly what Alvarez does in his AD job at Wisconsin. I am going to come over here more often so I can get the scoop.

Who knows, Chryst may even be the first Badgers coach to lose to the Gophers in over a decade.

This, though, is exactly why you don't hire a guy like Chryst. You do not want a coach who has a dream job unless the dream job is at your school.

In Chryst's defense he will be going up against a resurgent Gophers program on the rise. I heard from BADger fans the Gopher game is actually feeling like a rivalry again.

At least Chryst has something to fall back on between now and the 17th...

Maybe Chryst is one of the Head Coaches who is classy enough to tell his kids personally that he's leaving them. If not going with P.C. being the 6th coach that turned down Alvarez.

This is a so so hire. He probably won't blow up the whole program like a Brewster, but who knows if he'll be winning division titles every year.

I just hope we beat them at home next year or we're well on our way to 15 straight losses.

While i expect it to be Chryst, just heard a clip of Alvarez on the radio refuting the report of the hire. Says no one has been hired at this time.....or something to that effect. He said the search was ongoing and they would make the right hire.

He made it sound like Anderson left because he and family liked west coast better.
