All Things Jarvis Johnson Thread

Jarvis Johnson @MuhneyyChief_12 has been offered by Cal and Maryland since playing well this weekend. @NorthstarHoops

I did not like that quote from the video "People say there is not a reason why i wouldn't go there but it's just that i want to see other places first before i commit if i do commit to the University of Minnesota."

Actually, I find that quote encouraging. That's how you would talk about your front runner.

I don’t see how nobody thinks anything of that quote but when Drayton Carlberg visits Oregon everybody is freaking out. Can’t the same logic be applied to both?

Go ahead and cut it to one. Now!

Actually, I hope he gets to take his officials before he commits to the Gophers. Get those visits out of the way now and commit. :)

We have offers out to several more guards. Don't get beat!

This isn't smart, but if our last spot for a guard was going to an out of state kid who is considered better, I still want JJ.

I will not feel the slightest bit sorry for him if he gets beat to the punch by someone else. That's making a big assumption that he even wants to play for the U. Frankly its hard for me to make that assumption in light of all the surrounding circumstances. If he was sold on the U, especially when they have numerous other offers out to guards, I think he would have committed by now.

That's absolutely his right, but at the same time its absolutely Richie's right to say "OK then, we're taking the best we can get and you are not getting special treatment". There is a small part of me who hopes he does want to play here and gets beat to it by someone as good or better, in the off chance hope that it teaches the local talent a lesson. Not likely, but I get a bit annoyed that the local kids have developed this stigma about the U.

Either way, it will work out!

Agree DH. At some point we need to rebuild a legacy of recruiting , getting and making local kids successful here at the U. It may as well start again with Alex and JJ.

Gross and Too Much Information but

per Sid:

• Alex Illikainen, the 6-9 basketball player from Grand Rapids, Minn., who will play his senior season at Brewster Academy in New Hampshire and Jarvis Johnson, the highly recruited DeLaSalle guard, will make their official visits to Minnesota this September, and the chances are good that both will commit to the Gophers eventually.

The jig is up boys. Give up this ruse that you're considering other schools and commit to the Gophers today for Sid says it is so.

per Sid:

• DeLaSalle basketball standout Jarvis Johnson has his official visits with the Gophers, UNLV and Wisconsin, and Johnson says that he has been in contact with former Cooper standout Rashad Vaughn, who is a freshman at UNLV. “I have been talking to Rashad Vaughn and we are pretty close,” Johnson told GopherHole.com. “He is telling me that he likes it there and it is pretty comfortable to be there.”

Rashad Vaughn...the gift that keeps on giving.

With the NCAA's admitted lack of resources and ability to enforce, God only knows what UNLV and the like are getting away with.

Amelia on Jarvis' recruitment:

Johnson is getting ready to start his official visits, and his brother told me he probably won't make a decision until November. Minnesota is the first official, and considering he lives in the university's backyard, it's a clear sign of respect for the program, even as his recruitment has widened significantly.

Go Gophers!!

He gone. (Just my opinion).
I hope my opinion is wrong and I would welcome him with open arms now or in November.

Funny, I actually feel better about Jarvis than I do Alex (I think we have a great chance at both though).

Not sure if this has already been posted somewhere, but 247 has Jarvis visiting us on Sept. 5th and Wisconsin on Sept. 20th in addition to UNLV on Oct 10th.

In the 8.25 issue of SI (with the girl little league pitcher on the cover), there is a big article about a dude that ran a powerful AAU basketball in NY and is currently in prison on a drug dealing conviction. He "delivered" Beasley to K-State among others.

The article is called "Out of Power" by Pete Thamel (maybe there is an online version someone can find).

It talks about brokering, agents, players getting "delivered" to certain programs, AAU coaches getting assistant coaching gigs at colleges, and more.

My three takeaways: 1) I feel like I need a shower, and 2) makes me sad to think about the disadvantages we face if we are "doing it the right way", and 3) makes me sad to think about us possibly doing it the wrong way.

...and 4) the best success our major programs have had were the result of doing it the wrong way. The football program in its heyday was sketchy, and basketball got its best players in the 70's and early 80's under highly questionable circumstances.
