All things fall practice camp

And just like that Streveler has a great practice & all is well again.

Dr. Don's crap aside, I thought I read a quote a while back that talked about this, but I couldn't tell you the source.

I know I did too. Not only that I read it but I also read it for it a second time to make sure what I read. Now if I could only remember where and when I read it.

FSN: Gophers offensive linemen focus on being more versatile

"It's the idea you can get your best five on the field," said Gophers offensive coordinator Matt Limegrover, who also coaches the offensive line. "If you're a specialist, if a guy's just a left tackle and he's your backup left tackle and he's a good football player but you can't move the pieces around to get him on the field if someone goes down, you're playing with an inferior player. You're not playing with your best five. So all those guys know that versatility's the key, especially developing as a younger guy."

A quick glance at the Gophers' projected starters on the offensive line shows that they indeed are versatile. Senior Zac Epping has been a starter for Minnesota since his freshman year, but not all of those starts have come at one position. Though all 13 starts in 2013 came at left guard, Epping has also played center and right guard for the Gophers.

Junior Josh Campion has started 26 games for Minnesota, and all 26 have come at right tackle. Though he's expected to be the Gophers' starting right tackle once again, Campion has prepared for the possibility of playing some guard, just in case.

"This summer, coach just said, 'Be ready to play some guard,'" Campion said. "Here in the summer and last spring, I trained a little bit at guard just to be ready."

Go Gophers!!

STrib: Gophers notes: Intensity boils over a bit during drills

It started with a pancake block Monday, as Gophers center Tommy Olson flattened redshirt freshman defensive lineman Demaris Peppers.

Soon, Peppers was taking out his frustrations on Olson, so while the rest of the team got a water break, assistant coach Jeff Phelps pulled the defensive linemen aside and made them do up-downs. That’s the drill where they run in place and drop their chests to the ground each whistle.

When the Gophers resumed their 11-on-11 session, Olson drove linebacker Damien Wilson to the sideline, a move that probably would have drawn a flag for unnecessary roughness.

This is the best news from camp yet. I like mean in my linemen. And I like mean in my RBs. Thank you Mr. Williams for playing mean. Now there's dumb mean and smart mean. We need smart mean of course. But you also need to send a message. He probably went overboard, but I will never forget Epping against Texas Tech. He is a MAN.

Yup! When it comes to football, nasty is good! Stupid is still stupid. Some would argue Epping was stupid, I'd disagree. He set a tone for Gopher
offensive line mentality that seems to be on course to dominate. I too, like Mr Williams abusing opposing defenses. Nice to hear!

CSNChicago: Now clear-cut starter for Gophers, Mitch Leidner 'a different guy'

“It was actually probably the best offseason I’ve ever had," Leidner said. "At first it was a little bit uncomfortable when coach Kill first told me to take over. I was a little bit like, ‘OK,’ trying to establish myself. By the time spring football rolled around, I was that guy and everybody listened to me. It didn’t matter what I said, guys were going to do it. Overall, they were really good to me, all the guys on the team were, and it was really cool to see everything take off like that going into this summer.”

The leadership is there. And with it has come relief from the redshirt sophomore. It all adds up to the team believing in him and believing that he can take the Gophers to even greater heights than they reached a season ago.

"Just to know that you’re that guy and you don’t have to worry about having a bad series and the next quarterback comes in," Cobb said. "He’s put in hours and hours in the film room. I mess around with him all the time, telling him he doesn’t have a social life and telling him he needs to spend more time with his girlfriend.

"But that guy, he’s going to lead us, and he’s going to be OK.”

Go Gophers!!

I disagree with Costa Rica gopher. McKinzy has looked excellent at every practice I have been to. Crisp passes and great form and moves well too. He is a little short but everything else looks great.

Unlike some here I admit that I am far from an expert but I thought McKinzy looked to be well behind the other QB's during spring practice. Maybe he has narrowed the gap now, don't know.

Yes by all means intensity is great and meanness will get the team going as a whole to do their part...but oh those dumb 15 yard penalities aren't fun to watch during the game.

Since a starting QB has gotten injured every year under Kill, one of these QBs better be ready to step in. It is likely one of Streveler, Mckinzy, Parra, Rhoda, will not only see playing time, but possibly even start a game or two.

Honestly, unless Leidner takes a giant step forward this year in passing, I don't think the #2 QB will be much of a step down. Streveler and McKinzy may be better runners, if not as big, and I can't imagine they're that far behind in the passing department. I don't know enough about Perra to say anything about him. But Rhoda was terrible in high school, saw way too much of him and he didn't even start towards the end of his senior season. Unless he's changed his game completely I don't know that I want to see him play for the Gophers.

We'll be fine.
Streveler can run, he'd at least be a similar player to what Leidner was last year, and has been said to have really good top end speed so maybe even would be a more effective runner.
I personally think people overrate the passing game in college football. Efficiency is more important than yardage or passing attempts at this level. The NFL is different, lots of college teams have won and won big using a running QB who has good efficiency off play action and in 3rd down/pressure situations.

+1

Mitch will be fine and Streveler will be fine also with a little experience. ML is a very accurate passer - spring game not withstanding - and can throw an accurate long ball. He hit Jones yesterday in stride for about a 30 yard touchdown pass that would have gone for a touchdown. He will hit enough in games to make teams back off the 8 and 9 man fronts. Streveler isn't quite as accurate and doesn't quite have the mental game down yet but he is accurate enough and very fast. I expect the coaches to play him a lot when ever we get a little lead. McKinzy and Rhoda are behind.

Just a note, Mitch and Streveler are making passes against a very good, fast pass defense.

for those that have been to practice this fall, would you recommend parking or taking the lightrail?

Leidner is heads and shoulders better than Streveler and McKinsy. Streveler has a ways to go as a passer and McKinsy will redshirt for sure.

I'm sure Leindner is "heads and shoulders better" since I've never heard of the guy.

I've only been to 1 practice this season. So, take it with a grain of salt

Leidner seemed slightly better than Nelson/Leidner last year. He wasn't great, but his play didn't raise any concerns. Our receivers are so much better today than last year at this time, the passing game should improve. We look like we have legit Big 10 WRs, we haven't been ale to make that statement since Decker-McKnight.

Our backups are a pretty big step back. Streveler is a good athlete and I think he'll be good in that running QB / FR-SO Jordan Lynch type role. I will be concerned if he is our QB and we are in obvious passing situations. He is a fantastic athlete and I hope he gets passed on the depth chart because I think he could be a really good WR or Safety.

McKinzy. . .I thought he looked good. He supposedly looked bad in spring and I only saw a small sample size, but he has a really good and accurate arm. He certainly looks further along as a passer than Streveler.

Rhoda. . .he didn't lose his starting job at Cretin. If he didn't start (and I think you're wrong on that), it was because of injury. Ricardo Johnson III never took Rhoda's job. He was a good HS QB. I'm pleasantly surprised he's had some success at the U, I thought he was a D2 guy. But he has a huge arm and he's a smart kid.

Perra. . .he was great in college. I would have been cool with him getting a scholarship last year, so I was tickled when he walked on. I do think he will need a bit of time though. I expect him to RS. I actually expect McKinzy to not RS, and Perra will be the QB of this class of RS FR.

What's up with blasting Hail To The Victors, On Wisconsin, Jump Around, and I-O-W-A on repeat during practice? Trying to simulate gametime atmosphere? You can hear it halfway across dinkytown.

Maybe the coaches said they'd remove specific songs from the rotation if we were to defeat that specific team. Motivational, I'm sure.

[Sarcasm]And admit it, you turned your head when you heard the music... [/Sarcasm]

I really hate these type of posts. We all know who he was talking about. What's the point?

I really hope to hear more things like this:
