Bucky's 5th Quarter chimes in:

13. Minnesota (1-0), W - 28-21 vs. South Dakota St., Next Week: at Fresno State

Minnesota won ugly on Thursday night, beating FCS foe South Dakota St. 28-21 at home. The Golden Gophers were out-gained 367 to 308 in the game and needed a late fourth quarter touchdown run by Mohamed Ibrahim to escape with a victory. P.J. Fleck and his staff have plenty to work on as they look forward to a road game at Fresno State next week.

Saturday Tradition chimes in:

12. Minnesota (W, 28-21 vs. South Dakota State)
Last week: No. 6

All that hype about Minnesota vanished pretty quickly after a lackluster performance against South Dakota State in the season opener. Despite having the talent and size advantage everywhere on the field, the Gophers needed a late gift from the Jackrabbits to start the year 1-0. There’s still a lot to like about this team, but good grief was that an ugly performance to kickstart P.J. Fleck’s third season.

Silly to read much into this stuff right now because it will change so much in the next few weeks. That said we are definitely getting dinged in the power rankings due to the FCS label in front of SDSU's name.

I would take the Jackrabbits in a matchup against most of these juggernauts some of the other teams in the conference played:
Tulsa
South Florida
UMass
Idaho
Miami OH
South Alabama
Howard
Akron
Ball State
Nevada

I honestly believe that team we faced on Thursday would beat most if not all the teams on the list above.

I don't think we're as as bad as some folks think we are... but ugly win / the OL and DL getting dominated in game 1 ... hard to argue too much.

Time to prove them wrong.

this is how power rankings/polls should be. Not based on hype or projection, but results. By results, we should be one of the bottom 2 or 3 teams. Ahead of Purdue obvs.

Northwestern played a really good ranked team and gave up only 10 points and a fumble recovery for a TD. Offensively they were not good and may really struggle but hard to judge as Stanford can be really good defensively.

Purdue had 5 turnovers on the road and had what is probably an unlucky loss but an L is an L. I’d have no issue ranking them below the Gophers. I do think a lot of people watched the game Thursday and were not impressed however - fortunate W.

Fred chimes in:

9. Minnesota Golden Gophers (1-0, 28-21 victory over South Dakota State in Week 1, at Fresno State Week 2). There isn’t a ton of differentiation in this list, numbers 10 through 7 – you could really put them in any order. I wouldn’t have been surprised if Minnesota lost to a very talented FCS team in South Dakota State at home in Week 1, and I won’t be surprised if they lose at Fresno State in Week 2. That being said, for now, based on strength of opponents so far, I’m comfortable ranking them ahead of Maryland at the present time.

Black Heart Gold Pants chimes in:

10. Minnesota (1-0)
Imagine if the referees didn’t take two touchdowns off the scoreboard for the Jackrabbits. Imagine if South Dakota State had a quarterback who could hit a single receiver in stride. Imagine if Minnesota didn’t have two competent running backs. This Minnesota team is bad and it should feel bad.

That is correct.

The easy button (which most have taken) is to pretend that because SDSU is FCS, that this was a really bad loss and therefore the Gophers are a bad team.

They'll find out the truth soon enough.

Detroit Free Press chimes in:

13. Minnesota
P.J. Fleck must be taking the long route on Rebuild Creek, because the Gophers' boat sprung a leak in the opener. At least Minnesota rallied to beat 2018 FCS semifinalist South Dakota State, at home, 28-21. And at the very least, Rodney Smith made a nice opening statement with 21 carries and 92 yards.

Next up: at Fresno State, 10:30 p.m. Saturday, CBS Sports Network.

Hoosier Huddle chimes in:

7) MINNESOTA (1-0, 0-0)
Defeated South Dakota State 28-21

Minnesota passed a tough early test against a feisty South Dakota State team. The Jackrabbits were neck and neck with the Gophers until the final five minutes of the game. After trailing through three quarters, Minnesota pulled ahead with a one-yard touchdown run with a little over five minutes remaining. The Golden Gophers would hold off SDSU for the rest of the game despite being out-gained in both passing yards and rushing yards. Minnesota head coach PJ Fleck certainly expected a cleaner game from his team, but the Gophers emerged with a much-needed win. Minnesota will have some confidence as they travel to California next week to play Fresno State. Can they shore up their mistakes before conference play?

Next Week: Minnesota @ Fresno State (10:30 on CBS Sports Network)

Buckeyes Wire chimes in:

11. Minnesota
The Golden Gophers might have rowed that boat this past week, but it looked like there were a few broken oars in the water. The Golden Gophers barely got by the Jackrabbits of South Dakota State — in Minneapolis. ‘Nough said. That human energy drink better known as P.J. Fleck better get things going fast.

MLive.com chimes in:

8. MINNESOTA (1-0)
"There are no bad wins" P.J. Fleck told reporters after Minnesota held off South Dakota State, 28-21, but there certainly are reasons for concern for the Golden Gophers after a Week 1 nail-biter. Minnesota trailed in the fourth quarter against the FCS school, and didn't seal the win until Mohamad Ibrahim's 1-yard TD with 5:39 left. On offense, the Gophers averaged just 3.1 yards per carry and Tanner Morgan passed for 176 yards with one touchdown and one interception. (Last week: 7)

So our power ranking is all over the place depending on who you ask?

This is usually the case when checking out power rankings early on in the season. Even from 2012-2014 when we had some blow-outs and only had a loss to TCU in the non-conference, the B1G rankings usually had the Gophers lower. Just need to keep rolling with wins to rise the rankings both in B1G and nationally.

Yep, just like with the pre-season predictions it is still just a crap shoot at this point, nothing has really changed.
