If this pandemic keeps going through the fall, Trump will try to cancel the election. Count on it.

100% agree. It won't take until the fall. It will be when his polls hit 35%. He was never going to walk out of the Oval Office on his own.

I've never been a Biden fan but the speech he gave today was the speech trump was supposed to give. Given the current circumstances, he's going to pile drive trump into the ground. The country is probably done with the nonsense. That's why trump will have to cancel the election.

Serious question: can a president even do that? Don't states and localities conduct all elections? What would the federal government do--send troops in to disperse voters at polling places? Let's flesh this out.

It's not a stupid thread. It's an unthinkable thread. Unfortunately.
Agreed. Between the botched response to the crisis and the near-certain recession, Trump is toast, and he knows it. It's not outlandish to wonder whether someone as impulsive as him would do something drastic. Leveraging a crisis to justify suspending the democratic process is right out of the dictators playbook.

Constitutionally he cannot. But the "Originalists" here would have no problem taking Trump's side.

Biden will take control of the military.

Trump treats the military leaders poorly. They’ll turn on him in a second.

If he tries something like this, I hope they throw him out and use his fat head to open the door!

Not a constitutional scholar, but I suppose that in order to suspend an election, some type of national emergency would have to be declared. If the President tried to do that by executive order, it would likely be challenged in court or Congress could take some action to countermand the President.

just for the sake of speculation, if Corona got really bad - like worse than China bad - I suppose you could claim that holding an election would be medically unsafe. Unless it was a national mail-in election or they figured out some way to vote on line.

In all likelihood, the only way for a President to hold onto power after his term expired would be to try a military coup - and he would have to have the Military strongly behind him. Or a whole lot of militia members storming into DC with their AR-15's and AK-47's.

Puti is in the process of extending himself as Supreme Russian Leader through 2036. Remember that he not only advises, but actually directs IMPOTUS. Yes, this could definitely be plotted.

Hopefully, even probably, we won't get to test this idea. Looks like Americans are reasonably embracing the distancing/isolation that will be needed to get this to die off by summer.

It's a theme lefties have been fantasizing about since the day he was elected. It's so thrilling and exciting for you to envision how much hate you'd get to vent if it happened.

There's a reason why no state is cancelling their primaries for the democrats. They don't want to set some kind of false comparison for Trump to cite as a precedent in the fall.

I dont envy you trying to explain to your grandchildren how you could ever have been a Trump supporter.

Hopefully they'll forgive you someday.

The National Debt, which will require your grandchildren to pay the interest on every day they go to work for the rest of their lives', was increased by 9 trillion dollars (that's 9,000,000 piles of 1,000,000 dollars each) by President Obama and you are worried about what Trump has done to them? Never an hour of work that they will not have part of their pay taken from them to pay for something you and Obama did for yourselves at THEIR expense, forever. Who the heck are you to pass out that kind of sanctimoniousness? PS I did not vote for either man.

When your boat is sinking, there is some merit to not enlarging the hole.
