Okay, it's time to figure out whether the Gophers treat us to a win or trick us into another week of pissing and moaning, kicking the dog, cat or ???? and general fuming.

Predict the score of next Saturday's game and select which team will win and the final score. Because kick-off isn't until late, the deadline for your prediction is Noon, Saturday, 10/31

We're staying with the change in the format that we started two weeks ago with PSU. Just put your moniker, the winning team and the score on one line like this:
MN Snowman: Gophers 28-27

Mr Smith: Mich State 17-16

Wonderlust: Minnesota 42-3

CDHTrel: MSU 50-11

_______________________________________________

The winner gets listed in the "Roll of Honor" (see below) thus earning adulation and testimonies galore.

I also calculate and publish season-long standings (click here for the Small Print and more details).

Standings through last game are here: Season Standings

You win this week's competition if you predict the exact score -- according to Winnipegopher and SanDiegoPete (both winners who predicted the exact score) it's pretty easy. If nobody predicts the exact score, whoever picks the winning team and is closest to the exact score wins. (See Small Print for how that's calculated.)

Please note the additional provision for a game with tied scores. And please note what happens if there are picks with the same score differential and how we resolve this for both the game predictions and for the season standings. (We've had several ties for first place in basketball with the accompanying wailing, renting and gnashing by those who just miss out for the game in question.)

Again -- your prediction needs to include your moniker (screen name) followed on the same line with the team you think will win and the score. I automate the data entry process as much as possible -- that's why it helps if everyone uses the requested format:
moniker Gophers (or Minnesota) xx - xx

example: MNSnowman: Gophers 31-24

If everyone uses their moniker, this format and consistent names for the teams, it's easy and fast to transfer the data to a spreadsheet used to track predictions.

If it's not in the right format, it likely will not be included. (The biggest reason for not getting your pick counted is not putting your moniker in the prediction and/or putting the winning team and score on more than one line.) We had one GopherHoler who actually nailed OSU's score and was only off by 3 points -- would have been tied for first place. But (s)he hadn't submitted the prediction in the correct format and thus it wasn't counted. Don't let that happen to you!

And even if you don't win this game's prediction, you'll garner valuable points in the Predict the Score Contest as long as you pick the winning team. Note: if you're a visitor from Mich State, I'll include your prediction but won't include you in the standings as you're a "One-game Johnny -- or Joannie" ... :D

Important Announcement re Season Standings

GopherHole has announced that it will donate this new Gopher football book to the winner of the season-long Predict the Score competition. In addition, a separate prize will be given to the participant who has the highest number of points in the standings and is listed as a donor to GopherHole as of 10/31/2009.

Gophers Illustrated - The Incredible Complete History of Minnesota Football by Al Papas, Jr.

Per the University of Minnesota Press (the Publisher):

A unique graphic history of Gopher football—meticulously researched and drawn by Al Papas Jr.

Beginning with their first game in the fall of 1882 against Hamline University, the Minnesota Golden Gophers are one of college football’s oldest and most storied programs, winning six national championships and inspiring countless fans across generations of Minnesotans and university students. What Gophers Illustrated makes abundantly clear is just how fascinating this past century of Gophers football has been.

Illustrated by a wealth of original detailed sketches, Al Papas Jr. collects both the well-remembered and long-forgotten moments that have made the Golden Gophers a Minnesota treasure. From the 1903 game against Michigan when the Little Brown Jug was first left behind (and where students were arrested and fined two dollars for practicing their “ski-u-mah” chant at a “nightly hour”) and the golden era of the 1930s and early 1940s under legendary coach Bernie Bierman to the 1962 Rose Bowl and the more recent rushing exploits of Lawrence Maroney and Marion Barber III, Gophers Illustrated highlights the players and games throughout the decades that brought the crowds to their feet.

With Gopher football returning to the University of Minnesota campus for the first time since the days of fabled Memorial Stadium, this book does not just celebrate the seasons past but helps usher in a new era of Gopher players, games, and fans. Wonderfully illustrated, painstakingly researched, and full of stats, game charts, and stories both whimsical and poignant, this new and completely updated edition of Gophers Illustrated is a must-have for any fan of the maroon and gold.

“Gophers Illustrated is the ultimate book on University of Minnesota football. It takes you through all the history and tradition of our program from the 1800’s right up to the stars of today. This book is a must for anyone who loves Gopher football.” —Tony Dungy

“Once in a while something comes along that is absolutely perfect for Gopher fans, and this would qualify; hands down! What made this book incredible was the unexpected. What separates this book from the rest is the details, the uniqueness and the one of a kind sketches that dominate the book. Each page had a unique drawing of the player done by Papas and then had a well written and always interesting bio of the player. The book is outstanding and anyone who considers themselves a Gophers fan should have one in their possession.” —The Daily Gopher

“Incredible. Simply incredible. For Gopher fans, I really can’t recommend this book highly enough. It’s like holding the 'M' Football Hall of Fame in your hands. It’s like someone dumped the entire contents of the football archives into your lap. Combine it with the U Libraries Memorial Stadium site, and you need virtually nothing else Gopher football-related in your personal library. Al Papas Jr. has not only written, but drawn by hand, the best Gopher book I’ve ever seen.” —Jon Marthaler, TNABACG

Al Papas Jr. grew up attending Minnesota Gopher football games with his father, who played for coach Bernie Bierman. A one-time sports cartoonist and newsroom artist for the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, he has also created artwork for teams in the ABA, the NBA, the NHL, and for the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame.

Please resubmit (rather than edit) your “Predict the Score”entry using the correct format:
