7. Tanner Morgan – Minnesota
Preseason Rank: 86; Week 6 Rank: 27; Week 12 Rank: 9

Perhaps the best season from a quarterback that you didn’t see coming, we’re a long way from Zack Annexstad seemingly entering the year as the starter for the Gophers way back in early summer, 2019. All Morgan did was finish the year with the country’s seventh-highest passing grade as he was every bit of an elite quarterback this season. He threw for 3,252 yards and 30 touchdowns against just seven interceptions and had multiple games with elite-level passing grades, including three overall outings with a passing grade above 90.0 this year. In perhaps one of the finest displays of accuracy, poise and touch, Morgan connected on 21-of-22 attempts for 396 yards and four touchdowns against Purdue in Week 5 as he finished the season with the nation’s 11th-best passing grade over the middle of the field and 10th-best grade on throws outside the numbers. He didn’t just dink-and-dunk passes short of the first-down marker either to complete such a high percentage of his passes, he took his shots and made his own receivers open with an incredible pocket presence in 2019.

Incredible. As a pure passer he was more accurate than Fields (in the games I watched) although small sample size.

Really excited to see if Morgan can take another step in his development this off season and reach even higher levels. Amazing to think of what he has accomplished as just a redshirt sophomore. As he moves into his junior and senior years these should in theory be the best years of his career at the U.

Very real possibility we have the #1 QB/WR combo in the country next year in Morgan to Bateman.

Fields is pretty solid as a passer as well and adds the added dimension of being able to run. It will be tough for Morgan to overtake him in QB rankings because of that but he is the easy #2 choice in the BIG at the QB position.

I will never ever believe a year older = better game day totals. #Neveragain

Isn't just about stats though. Pocket presence, defense reading, decision making are all things that should improve with experience. Plus you add in the fact that the O-Line should be even better next year as all 6 guys come back from last year and should be bigger, stronger, and more mature.

The combination of great receivers, a strong offensive line, and a really accurate QB should be deadly. Can't wait to see if our offense can take another step next year with all the returning experience it will have.

Yep, splitting hairs and Fields has lived up to the hype and because of his size and wheels is better vs elite pass rush, but consider his blue chip line, etc. In the games I watched (again relatively small sample size) his downfield accuracy was a bit erratic but I’ll leave the film guys like PFF to break that down and give a final ranking. NOT underrating Fields. He’s elite.

In passing efficiency, Morgan finished fourth, behind Burrow, Jalen Hurts and Justin Fields.

And a good portion of this forum wanted Annexstad over him to start the year!
