Assuming the SEC, B12 and ACC play this season, our rivalry streak with wisconsin will no longer hold true (we could make a claim for the game still holding a record if all college football were to not play this year):

Go Gophers!!

Bulls**t.

There was no 2020 Big Ten season.

We will absolutely continue to claim the rivalry was unbroken. As is correct. Both middle fingers raised high.

Sorry, if they don't play this calendar year, streak over, unless they play in the spring and even that would be with an asterisk. At least it would be during the academic year.

Does it get a double asterisk if we win but in some way that people discount? /s

Nope. You're wrong and probably being a liar about it.

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure we hold this record because a couple others were interrupted by WWII. The "this shouldn't count" card doesn't work.

So it's all subjective anyway. Then we'll continue to claim it.

Central Florida "claims" a national championship, for cripes sake. I don't see anyone breaking into the stadium and ripping the signs down.

Don't be a dink.

and UCF is mocked for their sad need to pretend they won something they didn't. We can be better than that. Our rivalry with Wisconsin is still one of the oldest and best in CFB. If it doesn't have the longest "streak" oh well.

Silly take.

Does anyone in the country outside Minn and Wisc actually give a rat's behind that we have the longest streak? Not really.

We'll continue to claim it. Thanks

Uhh, liar, what is untruthful? They won't play in 2020. When anyone looks at the Axe, 2020 will not be there. Wikipedia? Blank. The Big 10 sitting out is not Ok/Ok St, NC ST/Wake or Kansas/KStates problem.

I presume Clemson/So Carolina won't be playing, unless they meet in a Bowl/Playoff.

I'm as proud of the streak as anyone. But if it's not played, well it's over.

On the bright side, Gophers are back-to-back Big 10 West Champions.

If they play in the Spring of 2021, I would consider that a continuation of the 2020 season.

the key thing is that they play a game. well, this game just happened to be delayed, but it would still be played. It's like how they list bowl games as part of the same season, even if the bowl game is played on or after the new year. (i.e. the Outback bowl is considered to be part of the 2019 season, even tho the game was played in the calendar year 2020.)

so, as I see it, if the Gophers and Wisc play in the Spring of 2021, that still counts as the 2020 season. Steak maintained.

The streak is broken if no game is played. there is still a chance to play that game.

There is no problem. You're trying to conjure a false dilemma, where there objectively is none.

2019:
129th consecutive meeting between Minn and Wisc
117th consecutive meeting between Kansas and K State

2020:
no Big Ten season was played, there never was a season
if KU/KSt play, it will be the 118th consecutive meeting
if their season gets cancelled, then there never was a season

2021:
130th consecutive meeting between Minn and Wisc
if KU/KSt played in 2020, then it will be the 119th consecutive meeting
if not, then it will be the 118th consecutive meeting.

That is objectively correct, despite you trying to invent a false scenario.

The definition of consecutive merely depends on if a season exists in the first place, which is independent of any calendar.

If the 1997 Final Four doesn't count because we did the same thing everyone else did but did a horrible job of hiding it, I don't see how this counts.

If no college football is played it's fair to ignore this season but if there is a college football season and the game isn't played, it's no longer continuously played.

If you define it as the longest continuously played conference series then it would still hold that title as there was no 2020 Big Ten season.

Bolded: ok good then, because there was no season.

The Big Ten says there is no season, then it doesn't matter if lesser conferences play some games. That's not a season.

It doesn't make sense to define a season in the context of the Big Ten when the record is in the context of major college football. There is more to major college football than the Big Ten.

It makes perfect sense, if the Big Ten tells its members that they aren't allowed to play. That's the definition of no season.

This record is defined by calendar year, so if no games are played until Fall 2021, the streak will break.

If we play in Spring, I would consider the streak un-broken since it would techincally be the 2020 season.

If NO football is played at all, under all conferences, most people will likely consider this year an exception since everyone would reset to a streak of 0 otherwise.

Absolutely not defined by calendar year. It is solely defined by season.

Also interesting that you pronounce that it is defined by year ... then go on to give two examples of where it clearly violates the calendar year rule, but is still OK to call it consecutive.

Fair point. I suppose I was just pointing out exceptions to the rule that most folks would be okay with, even if they are holding onto the "it's defined by year".

Uh, lesser conferences. Right. That's even more absurd than your stance that the streak would remain, so now I know to not take your thoughts on the matter seriously. Good one.

Wow I am desperate for stuff to read about Gopher Football, but this conversation is just dumb. I feel like I have lost brain cells reading it. Yet felt compelled to keep going.

You are entitled to believe a false, incorrect opinion.

Just don't be surprised when the next Gopher Badger football game is correctly referred to as the 130th consecutive meeting.

Perhaps it’s all about semantics. If “consecutive years” seems dicey to some, how ‘bout we talk about “consecutive seasons,” instead?

Dumb. Asterisks are even dumber. Its consecutive seasons. If they play in the spring, all possible seasons have been played since 1906.

If they play in the spring, it will still be the 2020 season. Just started late.

Was the bowl game part of the 2020 season? Nope, 2019.

They will not call it the 2021A season and the 2021B....it will be called the 2020 BigTen season and championship.

Okay. I'm not going to look it up but I assume we played during the Spanish Flu, WW1 and WW2?
