Bob Nightengale has it wrong. What MLB did today is ALL OF PRO SPORTS most important move since Jackie Robinson

Opinion: MLB pulling All-Star Game from Georgia is league's most important move since Jackie Robinson

Bob Nightengale, USA TODAY
Fri, April 2, 2021

Major League Baseball, in its boldest move since integrating its sport in 1947 with Jackie Robinson, announced Friday that Atlanta will be stripped of hosting the 2021 All-Star Game. In protesting Georgia’s new discriminatory voting bill, MLB acted without waiting to see what other leagues or conferences will do. It took a stand, even though baseball is considered to be the most conservative of the major sports leagues.

“Major League Baseball fundamentally supports voting rights for all Americans and opposes restrictions to the ballot box,’’ Commissioner Rob Manfred said in a statement announcing the decision. “In 2020, MLB became the first professional sports league to join the non-partisan Civic Alliance to help build a future in which everyone participates in shaping the United States. We proudly used our platform to encourage baseball fans and communities throughout our country to perform their civic duty and actively participate in the voting process. Fair access to voting continues to have our game’s unwavering support.’’

Just like that baseball, in protesting a political act, became the first league to move one of its jewel events in the same calendar year, just three months before the July 13 All-Star Game.By making this move, Manfred has put other leagues on notice as long as Georgia insists on standing by this bill.

- The NFL surely can’t give Atlanta another Super Bowl.

- Same goes for the NBA and its All-Star Game.

- And the NCAA and the Final Four.

Hyperbole much, Broke?

This isn't even on the level of the NFL pulling the Super Bowl from Arizona in 1991 for AZ not having MLK as a paid holiday.

Compared to the SB, It's a meaningless exhibition game, pull your head out of your ass you fraud.

Why will they regret it? Angry Donald's who hate cancel culture will cancel them?

Anyone who truly believes MLB will 'regret' this decision is delusional. And anyone who believes MLB will be the last powerful organization to take a bold stand against voter suppression had better buckle up, Buttercup. I think you have some big, big surprises coming your way.

The country is changing, whether you understand it or not. The vast majority of Americans will not abide an attempt to revive the stinking corpse of Jim Crow.

I pretty much agree with the last sentence of your first patagraph. This is just the start.

Difficult spot for conservatives. Do they start acting like the left on campus? Acting like the left by putting pressure on companies? Acting like the left and ignore federal mandates as we see in sanctuary cities? Burn and loot to give a voice for the unborn?

Goes against our nature but maybe to not join the battle means to lose it.

Poor conservatives! They never put pressure on businesses or organizations. Never.

They save their outage for really important things. Kneeling silently during the anthem, Dr. Suess and of course Mr. Potato Head.

You mostly got the first one to stop. Suess sales are surging. No word on the Potato Head front.

Do you have examples of companies being forced by the right to change their policies? Even companies being forced by the right to speak out in support of conservative causes?

Georgia voting bill 2021

The absentee ballot request period is shorter, starting 11-weeks before the elections and ending 11 days before.

Runoff elections are shortened to four weeks instead of nine.

Tightens requirements for county elections supervisors, such as requiring them to have absentee ballots counted by 5 p.m. the day after elections.

Bans the use of mobile voting buses for early voting except in emergencies.

Drop boxes have been authorized for use by law, but are only available during early voting hours and are placed inside early voting locations. There is also a population cap on how many can be set up. Drop boxes can be capped at one per 100,000 active voters in the county or one for every early voting location. Counties must choose between the smaller of the two. Drop boxes will only be accessible during early voting.

Passing out food and drink to voters is also criminalized and partisan poll watchers will have to undergo training. Poll workers can pass out water to voters.

The Secretary of State would no longer chair the State Election Board, and would instead be appointed by legislators.

I can think of a government building in Oklahoma City that had to close due to right-wing activism.

Of course he doesn’t. Conservatives don’t “cancel” by pressuring OTHERS to do the same. Conservatives believe in individual freedom of choice, not demanding others conform.

No company is being "forced " to do anything. The NFL and NBA both reacted to your anthem outrages. What MLB is doing is no different.

You guys have already done that. 8 murders, 17 attempted murders, 42 bombings, and 186 cases of arson at abortion clinics since 1977.

For sure and not proud of it. Point is does right need to ratchet things up to level we see during summers of looting/burning.

Woah! Went back a long ways for that one. Certainly everyone on the right condemned that, in contrast to what we hear from left media during summers of burning/looting.

Quite the stand taken by MLB. They moved an exhibition baseball game out of Georgia to appease their corporate overlords.

If MLB really wants to be taken seriously how about move all of the Braves home games out of Georgia?

MLB should be proud of their virtue signaling. The leftists and their media partners applaud them on a job well done.

So you view looting and burning as a step up from murder?

You're threatening to "ratchet up"? In order to achieve what, exactly? What is it that you would want your "ratcheting up" to accomplish?

Dial up the voter suppression efforts even higher, maybe? You want even longer lines at polling places?

What would your right wing version of "virtue signaling" be in favor of?

And, if you decide to "ratchet up", would it be even worse than attacking the Capitol on January 6? Because I thought that was a new low for you guys. I guess I was wrong about that.

This article gives some info on how companies are being pressure. Im just saying perhaps conservatives need to start doing the same.

Go for it. What would you pressure corporations to do, exactly?

Have to give the leftists credit for their ability to scream RACISM at everything.

First is was just screaming RACSIM. When that lost all of its effectiveness they moved on to SYSTEMIC RACISM. Took about a year and the leftist got bored of that one. So now they bring back an oldy but goody and scream JIM CROW or as Dementia Joe calls it JIM EAGLE!

Talking about you and the people just like you. You know “leftists”.

Well, apparently MLB agrees with 'the leftists' on this one. Looks as though MLB doesn't buy it when Republicans pretend this isn't about disenfranchising people of color.

So, I guess that makes MLB 'leftist'.

They won’t at all. Everyone will applaud MLB for this move. And all the big corps that pushed it will be protected by the radical leftist Democrats who love them. I see no downside to the MLB cowing to radical leftists and their lies. Most MLB fans are super woke like Howie.
