Researchers at GWU's Program on Extremism analyzed the cases of 257 alleged participants the mob attack on the Capitol—inspired by former President Donald Trump and his lie that the 2020 presidential election was "stolen"—and found them to be a "heterogenous group."

The researchers divided the 257 individuals, who include 221 men and 36 women, into three groups: "militant networks," "organized clusters," and "inspired believers."

'QAnon shaman' must remain in jail, judge rules

A federal judge ruled Monday that the so-called "QAnon shaman" who was charged in the Capitol insurrection is too dangerous to release and must stay in jail while his case moves forward.
Judge Royce Lamberth said that Jacob Chansley was unrepentant and could plot further attacks against the US government if put on house arrest. He rebuked Chansley as having shown "a detachment from reality" by claiming his actions on January 6 were peaceful and harmless.

"Defendant characterizes himself as a peaceful person who was welcomed into the Capitol building on January 6th by police officers. The Court finds none of his many attempts to manipulate the evidence and minimize the seriousness of his actions persuasive," Lamberth wrote.

Is this the swamp?

'A danger' to the community: Judge orders Trump appointee detained in Capitol riot inquiry

A Trump administration appointee, accused of charging a police line during the deadly Jan. 6 Capitol attack, was ordered detained pending trial Tuesday after a federal magistrate said former State Department aide Federico Klein represented a continuing "danger" to the community.

The magistrate's ruling came after federal prosecutors described Klein as "an enthusiastic participant in mob violence" and whose actions Jan. 6 "contributed to the overall violence on that day."

Citing video drawn from police body cameras and other photographs taken that day, Bond asserted that Klein was "unrelenting" in a sustained fight against police, once thrusting the riot shield inside the Capitol doors to prevent officers from securing the entry.

"We need fresh people!" Klein allegedly called out during the struggle. "We need fresh people!"

Senior Trump official says former president was responsible for inciting Capitol riot

The first several paragraphs follow -

Christopher Miller, who was the acting defence secretary during the final weeks of the Trump administration, has now blamed the former president for inciting the Capitol riots on 6 January.

The official said the relationship between Donald Trump’s speech in Washington DC that day and the subsequent insurrection appeared to be “cause-and-effect”, comments which represent a rare instance of a high-ranking Trump official agreeing with the central premise behind the former president’s second impeachment.

Asked in a Vice News interview due to be released this weekend about whether Mr Trump was responsible for the riot, Mr Miller said: “I don’t know but it seems cause-and-effect.

“Would anybody have marched on the Capitol, and tried to overrun the Capitol, without the president’s speech? I think it’s pretty much definitive that wouldn’t have happened,” said Mr Miller.

In the interview, a three-minute clip of which was released on Thursday, Mr Miller said some of Mr Trump’s remarks on 6 January morning were indeed “concerning”.

“The question is, did he know he was enraging people to do that (riot)? I don’t know,” he said.

Mr Miller was given charge of the defence department after Donald Trump removed Mark Esper from the post soon after the November 2020 presidential elections.

The former defence secretary has himself has been criticised for his role in the delay in deployment of National Guards on 6 January - criticism he rejected. “It comes back to understanding how the military works—this isn’t a video game,” he said.

Mr Trump’s critics have repeatedly alleged that it was his speech that had incited the riots as he had inspired his supporters to “fight” the election result. Members of Congress had been meeting on 6 January to formally certify Joe Biden’s election victory.

Man Charged With Attacking Cop At Capitol Riot Buried Police Badge In Backyard

Thomas Sibick is charged in connection with the attack on Metropolitan Police Officer Mike Fanone.

A New York man arrested Friday for assaulting a D.C. Metropolitan Police Officer during the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol confessed to the FBI that he buried the officer’s badge in his backyard after he returned home.
Thomas Sibick was arrested Friday in Buffalo, New York, according to court records. Sibick faces five charges, including obstruction of law enforcement during civil disorder, assaulting or impeding officers, and taking a thing of value by force or intimidation.
Sibick was caught on video assaulting MPD Officer Mike Fanone, who was tasered and assaulted by rioters, who dragged him into the mob as they tried to get into the Capitol. HuffPost previously reported on the identity of a man in a MAGA hat seen using a taser on Fanone during the attack.

MPD previously told HuffPost that there had been no arrests in the attack on Fanone, and Sibick’s arrest appears to be the first.
