I often roll my eyes when posters comment on how horrible WI & IA fans are. Every team has good and bad fans, U or M included.

For the fans, sports are supposed to be entertainment. If your are going to get all 'bent out shape' and act stupid, find a different form of entertainment and don't ruin the experience for polite devoted fans.

I sat near some Coyote fans, they cheered for the Coyotes, we cheered for the Gophers. No incidents, the celebrated, and we went home. There is always going to be the occasional jerk, but there are sore winners too, not just sore losers.

Nice read. Yep, there are jerks everywhere and I have had the misfortune of encountering some of the worst fans that Wisconsin or Iowa can offer. I also was sad to see the same a-hole hot-head Gopher fan is back in the seat in front of me again this year. The guy is a complete tool. They are out there... every team, including ours.

Sorry to hear Mr. Grow had to deal with this d-bag. Not the kind of guy I'd want representing Gopher Nation. No matter what's happening on the field, instigating violence against opposing fans is unacceptable. If I were sitting within earshot, I would have told this guy to take his tough guy act outside.

But, as Station19 said, every team has good and bad fans (although some have more of one kind than other teams...).

There were reports of fans of a certain unnamed school flipping off our band after the game. It's fair to point out that we have some classless fans, but lets not portray everyone else's fans as saints.

I found it amusing that he points out that "Coyotes" is pronounced "Coyotes". You don't resolve ambiguous pronounciation simply by reiterating it. It's like saying "lead" is pronounced "lead".

Was this gopher fan bald and fond of conspiracy theories? I seem to remember Mr. Grow being able to stir the pot pretty well.

Do you find this funny Mr. Grow?

That I remember. I think I was thinking of Jim Klobochar. He's dead, right?

Wait. Most weekends this Doug Grow is a Gopher fan, but because he went to USD one year decades ago he was wearing Coyote red?

Years ago I went to Modesto Junior College. If the Gophers played the Pirates today, I would be wearing my Gopher gear. I was also a CAL Bears fan growing up in central California, I have close family and friends who are students and fans of CAL, and last year we engaged in friendly smack talk before the Golden Bear/Golden Gopher game.

But sure, every other weekend Mr. Grow is a Gopher fan.

Weren't we discussing discussing a similar dispute between an older gopher fan and some young toughs down in Murfreesboro last week. Honestly, if you've never seen appalling fan behavior until you've dealt with soccer fans abroad. I was in Munich last year for a match and the police literally wait in full riot gear and shadow groups of fans where ever they go. Typically I'm pretty unflappable, but I was nervous being among the hooligans and the police. I still had to follow them for awhile just to see what, if anything, would happen.

I went to a Leeds-Tottenham game back in the 90's.It was a 1-1 draw and I still thought it was damn close to a riot afterwards. The Tottenham fans were directed down to a train station a half-mile this-a-way with cops lining both sides of the street, and the Leeds fans were directed to a different train station a half-mile down that-a-way with cops lining both sides of the street.

I've been avoiding other teams' message boards all week, but I have to imagine they are jumping all over this column saying "See? If even the Twin Cities media is saying how awful Gopher fans are, then they must be really awful."

Entertaining article by Grow. I can certainly visualize that happening with some of the goobers I've witnessed at Gopher football games.

Pretty much the same experience my parents had last year at the MSU game (Pops is a MSU grad), except in that instance the Gophers won. Before the game my parents were in their seats when they were graciously welcomed to TCF Bank Stadium by a hick Gopher fan with an unprovoked a "F*ck you". This coming from a 30-something to a couple of visiting gray-haired elderly fans in their 70s. Unfortunately, that wasn't the end of it, and after security failed to do anything, we just moved to the top of the student section.

Yes, I'm sure that at MSU they roll out the red carpet and throw rose petals at the visiting fans feet. :p

Were you already seated in the student section before you moved, or did you move over to the student section?
