Payton Willis needed a game like his 21-point performance against Wisconsin on Wednesday — and so did the Gophers basketball team.

Willis, a junior guard who transferred from Vanderbilt, entered this season as a candidate to be Minnesota’s third top scoring option, but too often the offense has been little more than a Daniel Oturu-Marcus Carr tag team.

So when Willis produced career-high scoring in the 70-52 victory over the Badgers at Williams Arena, it was the first time in 12 Big Ten games this season that someone other than Oturu or Carr led the Gophers in points. Gabe Kalscheur led the U in scoring in three nonconference games in December.

Willis was playing through a lingering ankle injury for weeks, and the 6-foot-5 guard had to sit out three games around the winter holidays because of it. Then he missed the 59-51 loss at then-No. 19 Illinois a week ago with an injury to his left, non-shooting shoulder.

“It’s always motivation any time you get hurt because sometimes you take the game for granted,” Willis said. “So, it kind of motivated me a little bit to not take any day for granted.’
