Please let me know at last why many of Brewster's assistants left after one year or so. I saw many red flags going up when Mike Dunbar resigned several years agao. What happened?

Was Brewster a *&&&*%# to work for?

Power struggles?

Really feel sorry for the players that had to adjust and readjust to 4 different Off. coaches in 4 years.
No wonder the Offense (and defense) was (is) a horrible mess.

What do our faithful fans get? Having the wonderful pleasure of being the laughing-stock of college football.
AGAIN!

Good thing he's not our coach anymore, eh?

Time to move on.

Will froggopher answer this...........................................

Why should anyone care now that he's gone? I mean, I'm intrigued to know because my dealings with him left me with a positive impression of the guy (one shared by others I know who've interacted with him). But I'm not interested enough to freak out and toss out an emoticon heavy rant.

Brewster fired Dunbar. Against the advice of the athletic department

The reset button has been pushed. The laughingstock aspect is officially over. The narrative has changed. Why Brewster had so much turnover is now mostly a matter of idle curiousity, since he is gone. Not that there is anything wrong with idle curiousity, mind you.

The Dunbar situation actually made sense to me, seriously we were running HB sweeps out of the shotgun on 3rd and inches, all it would have taken was the addition of a power short yardage set under center, Dunbar wouldn't do it, and a struggle ensued.
The hiring of Fisch is where it went wrong, not the firing of Dunbar. Hire a better guy, we probably aren't where we are right now.
Whithers left to go coach a top D back home in NC, Roof basically same thing at Auburn(from the south, more $). My bet is those guys could have been much better here if they had stayed. I really can't put the blame on Brewster for those 2. Move on man, we're on the upswing now.

BREATHE
Brewster gone.........FRESH AIR.........New coach coming
Better?

Assistants that have left the U.........

Thanks for your responses.
Why didn't Brewster hire his staff with the same length of his contract?

The top programs in the college football nation do not have much staff turnover. There is the diffence. Plain and simple.

Hire Mike Leach!!!! Please!!

I had hopes--high ones--for Brewster and the first red flag I saw was hiring Dunbar. I don't like the spread that much, but Dunbar's version of it almost seems to preclude the possibility of running the football effectively.

I think the epitaph on Brewster's coaching tombstone should read "Impatient from Day One Forward." Too much fiddling around.

I believe this is a big part on what caused this program to go down hill like it did under Brew. When the turnover really started snowballing I really ?ed how a program is going to turn around when this happens. Several comments were made that other programs that really turned things around went through the same thing with new coaches. Well, from what I understand, Ferentz still has assistants from the Fry era, correct me if I am wrong. I'm not suggesting that there should've been Mason asstistants retained however.

Brewster's hiring (by Maturi) assured that there would be no holdover coaches. It is reasonable to assume that a new coach won't retain someone on his staff that is currently employed in a position that can been seen as more prestigious then that of the new head coach. Most guys want their own people and they certainly don't want people holdovers who consider themselves smarter/ more qualified than their current boss.

Today on the radio in Sioux Falls they were talking about the Gopher Football program and joked that it wouldn't be long before they had to join the NSIC, then one of the hosts said "that might be alright, all of the schools would have somebody to play on Homecoming."

It is freakin' embarrasing right now, I am praying we make the right hire and turn this program around.........and soon.

I remember years ago, either right before or after Wacker, Sid made the comment that if they don't turn this program around they might as well drop down to next lower division.

Most folks asking for advice are really looking for an accomplice

I don't think all Brewster questions should be thought of as "things of the past". We need to learn about what went wrong if we hope to not repeat those mistakes.

I think the biggest problems with the assistants leaving is that the defensive coordinators got better job offers and the offensive coordinators were inept.

Equally embarrassing is the fact that they thought that was funny.

This is wrong. Its all about the players. Northwestern stays in shot gun for all short yardage plays just like almost all spread teams. They did fine in short yardage situations at TCF this year. If you remember the bowl game against kansas when they switched to the power I they still couldnt gain first downs in short yardage situations consistently. Its all about the players!

Seems that "let's just move on" is today's lazy way of avoiding the analysis needed to find the cause of a failure.

Cause of failure, kicking a dead horse!

Seems that "let's just move on" is today's lazy way of avoiding the analysis needed to find the cause of a failure.

Since you missed the memo!

Cause of failure could be explained by Glen Mason: coaching!

Or, by Brewster: bounces!

Or, by Maturi: Booing!

Or, we can ground ourselves in fundamental questions. Why does Weber throw an ace when the game is lost and not when the game is in hand? Coaching turnover? Philosophy of play? Method of coaching? Mediocre recruiting? Lack of respect from fans? Lack of an effective ground game? Lack of an effective pass rush? Lack of an effective linebacking corps? Lack of football acueman by the players? Lack of player retention from year 1? Transferring students? Troubled youth? Lack of presence in the marketplace or favorable brand image? Lack of imagination? Lack of fun in game play? Too much NFL in the hallway, not enough college connection?

After a while, it isn't the questions about the past that matter. All that will answer is how well we know history. If we want to create a future, we only need ask is what do we want and how do we plan on getting it? We want a football team that excels at rushing; can play disciplined football with motivation and aptitude to avoid mistakes; can pass effectively in simple and complex schemes; and can devastate, demoralize and destroy opposing lines and skill players. We want the team to be talented academically and champions of Minnesota football, on and off the field. We will be victorious by our spirited execution, our warrior ethos, our decisive plan of attack, and our ability to keep our enemies off balance from the beginning to the end of the game, never giving them an inch to claim victory. We will discern their weakness and exploit it with our strengths. We claim the axe, pig, jug, and bell as ours!

Solid post. Didn't know what to expect when I started reading it.. But by the end, my chili was almost hot!

This is exactly the kind of team and play I want to watch and support.
