Latest Strib online poll is whether Brewster should hit the road. Out of about 2,800 people voting (as of 9AM) almost 90% say "buh-bye". That alone is an indication that Brewster should get fired. A lot of Brewster's job is selling the program. Ultimately, that was a major reason that Mason got the heave-ho (that, and his inability to field anything resembling a defense). If this was a marriage, I'd say Brewster's relationship with the media and and the public now falls under the "Irreconciliable differences" category. And depending on how you spin the KansASS thang, you could possibly throw "infidelity" into the mix.

The more I think about it, and the more I've read on this board (90% of which is drivel, possibly including my own posts), I wonder if the tip to Marcus on this came from Maturi himself? Or if Maturi was smart a third party at his bidding. If he was looking for ammo to fire Brewster and to have public opinion behind him, he's crazy like a fox for leaking this story. Joel probably has the University IT dept. checking Brewster's internet hits hoping he's been checking out eastern European porn sites on company time. That way he can S-can him w/o paying the nut on the contrac.

I would say at least 90% of people reading the strib don't know enough about college football to make an educated decision on this matter. Maturi SHOULD know, but doesn't seem to.

No way, man. This is the voice of the people. Maturi should listen. After Brewster is gone, he should let the people vote on his replacement, too. Then after we hire Mike Grant, Maturi should pull a Wilf and sign a bunch of big name free agents and maybe even trade up in the draft. Then we'll be a Wild Card team in the Rose Bowl in no time flat.

I'm not the only one that actually read the question, am I?

This poll isn't about whether or not we should get rid of Brewster. It's about whether or not your feelings would be hurt if he went to Kansas (basically).

These are the same people that cast their votes for Jessie Ventura. Enough said. Leave the coaching decisions to the U. Let's just focus on showing up for games and supporting the team on the field. That would be a good start.

and of the 2000+ votes how many are Rube 6 pack who have watched even 1 quarter og Gopher football this season. Trust me, just be reading the comments on several stories you can tell the general intelligence level of the star trib voters...

Hey, I voted for Jesse. I look at that election as a bar prank that went too far. I never expected the clown to win.

That said, I agree with you that 90% of the voting public are morons, and shouldn't be trusted to decide anything. Including elections. But these same people are the ones you need to buy tickets for your stadium, watch the games on TV, and read about your team in the papers. And if you've lost them you're in trouble. IF public opinion has turned this vitriolic towards Brewster (who is the public face of the football program) then he has to go.

If someone started a similar poll on this board, I doubt the "kick Brewster to the curb" option would get 90% of the votes. But I'd bet you a beverage of your choice the total would be higher than 50%. And on this board only about 80% of the voters would be mouthbreathers.

One of the dumbest posts of the year and most certianly the dumbest poll/vote of the year. The Star Tribune in one breath above tabloid journalism as it relates to credibility.

So, Tikited...what's there to be positive about after reading the trash that get's posted on this board? Posters on here are some of the Gopher fans that populate TCF Bank stadium on game day? Don't you find that scary? If I was a recruit reading these posts there is no way I would come to this University. I've been a season ticket holder for 15 years, I've been to away games and bowl games, but it's becoming more difficult with each passing day to continue as a Gopher football fan. I don't want to be associated with most of the people on here who call themselves fans.

I hear you. 30+ year ticket holder. Born a Gopher fan-will die a fan. I have noticed your contributions tend to be very direct: Ex. Stupid this or that. Not exactly positive. I'm waiting for your hapy post.

If Maturi has to choose between pleasing the 200-300 hardcore gopher fans who patronize this board or the 2MM plus people living in the metro area who follow local sports (most of whom are complete idiots, I agree) what do you think he is going to do? And its clear from this poll as well as the one in the St. Paul paper's online article (http://www.twincities.com/ci_13953385?source=most_viewed) that Brewster has already lost the support of the latter. Actually, I think Maturi is more sensitive to what his boss thinks, as well as 50-100 key boosters. Most of whom probably have better things to do than post on this board. Or read it, for that matter.

The obvious loss of public support for Brewster the point of my original post, regardless of how I might feel on the topic. I think we're getting to a point in this mess where a bad decision by Maturi is better than no decision at all. What would be more concerning than the unwashed masses saying they'd be happy to see Brewster go (which IMHO is the same as saying he should be kicked to the curb) is if nobody bothered to respond to the poll. Or the newspaper decided it wasn't worth the effort to run a poll. After disgruntlement comes apathy. And we've been down that road before.

Joel Maturi is the athletic director and he needs to make a decision that is best for Minnesota football. The only real choices are for him to either extend Brewster or fire him. Putting off that decision until next year will hurt the program worse than the other two choices.

As far as the public's opinion, wins will heal all. If Brewster is making progress towards more wins, then he should be extended for two years with a re-evaluation after the 2011 regular season, which is before any bowl games. If Maturi doesn't think Brewster is making progress, then he should fire him now.

Personally, I think Brewster is making progress towards more wins and should get an extension.
