28 years ago today, Jim Valvano delivered his legendary speech at the first annual ESPY Awards before passing away two months later.

The backdrop: Valvano, who'd coached college hoops for 20 years — most notably at NC State, where the Wolfpack won the 1983 national title — was diagnosed with glandular cancer in June 1992.

  • Amid his battle, the ESPYs presented him with the inaugural Arthur Ashe Courage and Humanitarian Award.
  • Despite being so sick he was unsure he'd be able to attend, Valvano showed up and gave one of the the most memorable speeches ever.
"Cancer can take away all my physical abilities. It cannot touch my mind, it cannot touch my heart, and it cannot touch my soul. And those three things are going to carry on forever."
Legacy: Valvano announced the launch of his V Foundation for Cancer Research during the speech, which to date has raised over $250 million.
