Athlon Sports recently released its 2022 All-Big Ten teams and nine Gophers – four on offense and five on defense – were recognized.

Leading the way was center John Michael Schmitz, who was named First-Team Offense by Athlon. Schmitz, who will be a preseason favorite for the Rimington Award, was named All-Big Ten Second Team last season by the coaches. He has played in 44 career games and has made 23 starts at center.

Running back Mohamed Ibrahim was named Second-Team Offense despite missing almost all of last season because of an injury. Ibrahim, who was the 2020 Big Ten Running Back of the Year, rushed for 163 yards in three quarters against Ohio State last season before leaving with an injury.

Receiver Chris Autman-Bell was slotted on the Third-Team Offense, while tight end Brevyn Spann-Ford was named Fourth-Team Offense.

Autman-Bell led the Gophers last season in receptions (36), receiving yards (506) and touchdowns (6), while Spann-Ford added 23 receptions for 296 yards and one touchdown.

The Gophers had three players named Third-Team Defense in rush end Thomas Rush, linebacker Mariano Sori-Marin and defensive back Tyler Nubin.

Rush led Minnesota last season with 5.5 sacks, while Sori-Marin finished second on the team with 85 tackles. Nubin added 52 tackles and a team-best three interceptions.

Two other Minnesota defensive backs – Jordan Howden and Justin Walley – were named Fourth-Team Defense. Howden made 43 tackles and broke up five passes, while Walley made 29 tackles, recovered three fumbles and made one interception.

Go Gophers!!

The 2022 All-Big Ten team is led by 17 selections from Michigan, while Ohio State (16), Michigan State (11) and Iowa (11) also hit double-digit picks. Purdue and Minnesota each has nine selections on the Big Ten All-Conference Team for '22. The next tier is headlined by Penn State (eight), Maryland (eight), Nebraska (seven) and Wisconsin (seven).

Michigan oline with 4 spots on Athlon all-Big.

They left off a bunch of guys from the Gophers....hopefully incentive for the Gophers to add and elevate players on the season ending list. Go Gophers!

I couldn't help but notice we have more on the list than WI

Sparty with 11 spots, compared to Gophers' 9.

But, Jaylen Reed counts as 3 (WR, PR, KR). Their punter counts as another.

On just offensive and defensive spots, Gophers have 9, Sparty has 8.

Sparty gets a spot for RB with the 3rd team: Colorado transfer Broussard...I'd take Potts over Broussard.

Gophers match up talent-wise with everybody but Buckeyes and Wolverines; neither on the schedule. Iowa with 11 vs Gophs 9 (one is Iowa punter). Good year to have Iowa at home. Iowa with 3 on offensive side (TE LaPorta, and freshman AllAmerican OL Colby, young RB Williams).

Players that don't show up in this Athlon preview that might show up with post-season honors:

Dylan Wright: 4-star talent flashed on the field from opening night vs Ohio State though Bowl win vs WVU.

Tanner. He was 2nd team All Big in 2019, HM in 2020.

Fleck and Callahan very high on Ersery.

Filiaga started all of 2020 for Harbaugh and 4 games in 2021 before losing his spot on the nation's best o-line.

If Stapp can play at level his ACU teammate Gibbens did in 2021.

Dixon jumped off the field in Spring.

Trickett was an All-MAC kicker.

Carter seems ready to break-out.

Iowa hasn't figured out their QB situation yet and they will still be struggling with that later in the season.. This is the year if the Gophers want to take back Floyd.
