Lights weren't too bright for Gavin Frakes

True freshman Gavin Frakes replaced Diego Pavia on the Aggies second possession of the third quarter. Frakes has been getting equal reps with Pavia through spring and fall camp so he was ready when Kill made the decision to make a change.

"We were a little bit stagnant," Kill said. "I'm the one that made the call. I said let's give him a shot and we will go from there."

Frakes completed his first four passes, hitting Justice Powers for a 67-yard catch and run into the red zone. Three plays later, Frakes hit Kordell David with a back-shoulder throw in the back of the end zone from 10 yards out.

Frakes finished 9 for 13 for 143 yards with a touchdown and a late interception in the final minute. But more importantly, Frakes created the spark the Aggies needed offensively as NM State outscored Nevada 10-6 in the second half and outgained Nevada 185-132..

Aggies need to improve in the running game

Nevada dared the Aggies to throw the football while Pavia struggled to throw the football down the field.

Perhaps that's why the Aggies were not able to establish the run game that Kill wants to feature.

"We have to run it better," Kill said. "It makes life a lot easier..

Aggies defense has improved

Nevada's team strength are its running backs, and they were good when it counted.

Nevada rushed the ball 45 times for 179 yards. The Wolf Pack took a 7-2 lead with a four-play, 80-yard drive in the second quarter with nothing but run plays..

But outside of those two possessions, the Aggies defense didn't allow the explosive plays from a year ago and tackled well for the most part..
