Big Ten Spending:
1) Ohio State -$32.30 mil; 2) Iowa - $26.20 mil; 3) Wisc - $22.71 mil...11) Minnesota - $9.25 mil

Current AP Top 15
Team | $ per year in mil | Conf Rank in Spending
1) Oregon $15.86 (6)
2) Boise State $5.97 (5)
3) Auburn $28.20 (1)
4) TCU $16.63 (1)
5) Alabama $26.44 (2)
6) Utah $9.84 (5)
7) Wisconsin $22.71 (3)
8) Ohio State $32.30 (1)
9) Nebraska $17.93 (3)
10) Stanford $13.51 (7)
11) Oklahoma $20.79 (2)
12) LSU $22.74 (5)
13) Arizona $12.61 (8)
14) Mizzu $15.68 (5)
15) Iowa $26.20 (2)

Median Spending: $19.16 mil
Median Ranking in Conf Spending: 3.7
(Throw-out WACcy Boise St. & replace temporary apparition Arizona w/USC and rank goes to 3.26, Median Spending jumps to $19.74)

Conclusion: It wouldn't matter if the coach was Bill Cowher, Tim Brewster, Punky Brewster or Yoko Ono; Gopher football isn't going to be able to compete on a year-in-year-out basis til that $9.25 million number heads north. Compounding the problem, the next Gopher coach has to deal with not only B10 top 3 spending juggernauts Iowa & Wisconsin on a yearly basis but the addition of Nebraska's $17.93 mil, nearly twice what MN spends.

It has been well-documented that those figures are not apples-to-apples.

It is clear we don't spend what Iowa and Wisconsin spend. However, the gap is not as big as those numbers indicate. Accounting practices and how expenses are categorized factor into this in a big way.

In a true apples-to-apples comparison, the generally-accepted rank is somewhere in the middle of the pack in the Big Ten, ahead of teams that have beaten us regularly.

Spending, while certainly a factor, is not the #1 reason MN has been unsuccessful.

So what you're saying is that if we take out Boise State to the Mountain West, and spend more than TCU, we could win the Wac year in and year out. And then save money to spend on non-revenue sports that serve alcohol. That right?
