Did I hear right that when they ripped up the old floor, they discovered that the boards were resting directly on a base of packed sand?
 

No wonder the old floor was so cushy.
 

They also found Jimmy Hoffa under the old floor, that helped cushion the floor too...
 


So is that cross boards resting on sand that held the floor up? Hard to tell.

There was no discovery, really. They knew it was on packed sand all along. There were concrete posts where each part of the lattice work came together to give it a base, and the rest was packed with sand so that the floor would give. It's a great design, actually, and it was tremendous on a players legs.
