per Marcus:

Daniel Oturu was hadn't turned 5 years old yet when Gophers forward Kris Humphries was chosen by the Jazz with the 14th pick of the 2004 NBA draft.

More than 16 years later, Oturu is all grown up as a promising 6-10, 240-pound prospect — and he is expected to hear his name called Wednesday night, which would end the Gophers’ drought of not having a player drafted since Humphries.

The former Cretin-Derham Hall star, who averaged 20.3 points and 11.1 rebounds as a Gophers sophomore last season, realizes the significance of not only achieving his dream of becoming an NBA draft pick but also proving that you can stay home to do it.

“You don’t really have to go anywhere else,” Oturu said. “You can stay home and play for the home state program, you can be great. There are a lot of opportunities here. Growing up in Minnesota, I would never have passed this up.”

In the past 10 years, the Gophers and Northwestern are the only two Big Ten teams without a player selected in the NBA draft. On the other end of the spectrum is Michigan with 12. Michigan State and Maryland both have eight draft picks each.

well that gets us through the first round without an Oturu pick. Bilas mentioned him as a surprise he hadn't been picked in the late first, but we'll see where he ends up

Looks like Big Dan is headed to the Big Apple. Hope he doesn't rot with the Knicks. Funny it's the Wolves technically selecting him for them.

For a second there I was all excited the Wolves drafted him to keep him. Would have been a nice fit in the frontcourt. Womp womp.

Ouch, literally the worst possible spot. Thibs hates rookies and will grind his knees to dust in practice

Oturu should have stayed. He gets no guaranteed money, and he won't have any kind of NBA career playing for Thibs.

Really happy for Dan. He was a terrific Gopher and representative of the university. He should have a good, long NBA career.

Oturu to the Clippers, reuniting with Coffey. Noice!

The "no guaranteed money" thing is a myth. First round picks are given guaranteed contracts, it is slotted so they know immediately they have a 4 year contract and how much they'll get paid. Then there is the 5th year options with escalators and stuff.

If he signs a contract with the Clippers, he gets paid. You just aren't guaranteed a contract. The difference is NBA teams have put a ton of focus on young, cheap talent and draft picks are just that. You can't fill a roster of veterans, its too expensive. A lot of 2nd round picks and undrafted guys get a couple years off the bat because its like $600k/yr to do it.

So if he went 30th he gets a 4 year contract and now he gets what? A 2 year or 1 year?

2nd round pick contracts vary significantly in terms of years, guarantees, even now roster designation. Some guys take a 2 way contract in the 2nd round. Usually the contract terms start at the rookie minimum and are heavily favorable to the team (ex: 3 year deals but guarantee dates near the end of training camp so a guy is on a team for a year, comes to camp the 2nd year but can get cut without receiving that 2nd year salary if he's outperformed in that camp, on the fip side if he surprises and plays well as a rookie he's stuck at/near minimum for 2 more years).
