per this tid-bit from David Shama:

"Brewster has selected two of the four Honorary Captains so far for the opening game at TCF Bank Stadium on September 12. Bobby Bell was announced last month and now the late Sandy Stephens has been named. Bell, a two time All-American tackle, and Stephens, the first African-American All-American quarterback, were players on the 1960 national championship team. Stephens will be represented by his brother Ray, another former Gophers quarterback."

Go Gophers!!

Very cool, I wonder who they will have for the other 2. Will they go way back and grab a relative of Bronko or will they do something a little more recent, in the past 35 years. How about Dungy, Foggie, Ben Hamilton, Utech, T. Carter, etc.?

Dungy would be a great choice, if nothing more than recruiting purposes. I'm sure that there's a more than a few potential recruits have no idea that Dungy's a U alum. Never looks bad to have a Super Bowl winning coach on your side.

Perhaps a close relative of Bernie Bierman? He was also an All-American at the U of M

After all he is our #1 head coach of all time and helped bring a pretty good chunk of the national glory to old Memorial Stadium.

93-35-6 (.716) record in 16 seasons. Five National Championships, Six Big Ten Championships & Five undefeated seasons. Pretty hard over only a 16 season span for any head coach of any era (in all of college football) to top that.

With Grant you get someone who is eminently recognizable, played for Bierman, and won a national title.
