Gophers coach Richard Pitino on Tuesday, Feb. 11, at first declined to get into any talk about a supposed magic number of wins necessary for the team to make March Madness.

“It’s not good radio if I tell you that we are just going to focus on one day at a time and we don’t talk about anything else and we don’t look at anything else,” Pitino told host Mike Grimm on Pitino’s weekly radio show on KFAN.

But with Selection Sunday more than a month away on March 15, Pitino soon went there.

“Now from a more fun way to look at it, I do think that if you win — as crazy as it sounds — if you win four of your next seven and beat the right teams, you could get it,” Pitino shared.

Go Gophers!!

How about just going to Indianapolis and winning the Automatic Berth?

Right now they are 2 back in the Loss column and would have to pass 5 teams to secure the #4 seed. Tall task with 7 left to play, but should they do that, Gophers would need to win 3 games in the Big 10 Tourney.

To obtain a #10 seed or higher they have to remain at least tied with with Michigan & Ohio St in the Loss column as they do have the head-to-head tiebreakers. Can also take care of Indiana with a sweep. This is also assuming that Nebraska & Northwestern do not all of a sudden get really hot. Getting a #5-10 seed would mean the Gophers need to win 4 games in the Big 10 Tourney.

Falling below Michigan & Ohio St would likely result in a Weakling Wednesday appearance for the 4th time in 7 years. That outcome would force the Gophers to win 5 games.

Minnesota, Indiana, Penn St & Northwestern have never won it among the 11 member schools when the 1st Tourney was played (1998). Newcomers Nebraska, Maryland and Rutgers have also failed to cut down the nets.

5 more if one of them is Maryland, if not 6-counting the Big 10 tourney. Not having won the conference tourney even once is shameful. We went to the finals once and lost to OSU by 30 or so. MSU has won at least 5, OSU 4 or 5, UW 3 with 4 other trips to the finals.

Utterly shameful.

Monson, Tubby, and RP - take note.

No. 5 more of them period. Maybe 4 more if one is Maryland.
