Payne in portal (UPDATED: Payne commits to Texas A&M)

Pharrell is a cerebral kid. Late in the year, this team really stopped playing together as a team and some kids were out to “get theirs”. The staff allowed this to go on. Fairly sure Minnesota offered a competitive nil package. Pharrell wasn’t looking for that.

Also, read between the lines. They played Sunday. Pharrell probably had an exit interview w Ben late Monday or more likely Tuesday. He was in the portal wed am. What does that mean? His mind was already made up.

Well good luck to Pharrell finding a place in college basketball right now where the players are not out to "get theirs".

Thank you. However, some of these stories are not adding up for me yet but I am trying to follow along and think this through a bit.....

JOJ- one of the unhappy ones- was on the bench
Ihnen- gone- was on the bench
Carrington- gone wasn't jacking shots but was getting decent bench minutes

The guys that were putting up the volumes of shots in the games from Nebraska onward were Christie, Garcia - did the others see Ben as coddling Garcia and Christie two of our worst defensive players? This is also the time frame in which the Christie NBA talks started up....
Payne was limited to 5 shots per game in the last 6 Big Ten games - in the NIT things got a little better

How on earth do you lose a team that has gone from 2-18 to on the bubble with 5 games left?

We have to watch what happens with Garcia and Christie.

And if the Gophers can land a post player in the portal, maybe even someone who can shoot away from the paint -- an upgrade.

But they have to hope Garcia and Christie come back. Hawkins is back. And Mitchell. What about Fox?

I will say this one last time, Pharrell did not leave for more nil money.
He was literally quoted as saying how excited he was and how good this team could be next year if everyone came back. What could have possibly changed so much since the last game of the season? Hmmmmmm $$$$$$

Or he was just saying what he knew the person asking the question wanted to hear.

We will be watching. If even one of the two are gone, we are looking at an implosion.

"We have to give Ben a chance to develop his recruiting classes'

2 years later they are all gone -"the transfers are not that surprising"
Not surprising from the standpoint that this just seems to be the way things are these days. Guys that aren't getting the minutes they think they deserve don't stick it out anymore they just leave and go somewhere else.

Would love to think local guys would stick around but who the f knows at this point what players are going to do. 1,600 guys in the portal and there are still teams playing so likely to keep growing.

And before you or anyone tries to spin this into some defense of Ben, have said multiple times that I would have no issue with them bringing in a new coach if we are looking at a full rebuild again. However that still seems unlikely to happen so next year becomes a make or break year for Ben. He will have to find quality transfers to replace the guys that are leaving in order to avoid a step back.

There isn't a person on this board who would turn down several hundred thousand dollars at age twenty to make the move. I don't blame the players a bit. As a gopher fan and as a pretty permanent member of the have nots of college sports, it feels hopeless.
The it in the last three words is doing some heavy lifting.

What is a valid, reasonable it?

travis branham's big men in the portal as of yesterday:

payne listed

Makes the portal big men list:

Jevon Porter, From Pepperdine: Porter is the younger brother of Denver Nuggets' Michael Porter Jr. Like his older brother, Porter is blessed with a wealth of talent that you just can't teach. He has size, length, fluidity and skill on the offensive side of the ball with upside to continue tapping into as a floor-stretcher. Porter has the innate ability to impact the game on both ends. And if he gets stronger and more physical, then he can make a major leap in his development to potential become an NBA player like the rest of his family.

How do you know this?
