  • The first time the Gophers and Spartans faced each other was in 1950 (MSU wasn’t admitted into the Big Ten until 1953).
  • They’ve played each other 42 times, with Michigan State winning 81% of the time.
  • The Spartans had a 17-game winning streak from 1977 to 1997.
  • The Gopher’s longest streak was 7 games (from ’58 to ’70).
  • The rivalry is tied at 4-4 in the past 8 meetings.
  • When played on the campus of the University of Minnesota, we are 7-5 against the Spartans.
  • The Gophers and Spartans have only played each other twice in seasons when both teams went to bowl games (’85 and ’03) – the Spartans won both.
  • The Spartans ended 2008 with a #24 ranking – their 1st top 25 finish in 9 years.
  • The Spartans have 3 recognized National Championships: 1952, 1965 and 1966.
  • Since the Gophers last won the Big Ten (in 1967), Michigan State has won 3 conference titles (1978, 1987 and 1990).

Additional Factoid

When MSU won their first national championship (1952), Clarence "Biggie" Munn was their coach.

Clarence "Biggie' Munn was first team All-American at the guard position for the 1931 Golden Gophers. He was also the team's captain in 1931.

Go Gophers!!

So in '67, when we last won the Big Ten, MSU finished below us -- but was dubbed Nat'l Champ? Meh.

Oops, that should have been Nat'l Championships in 65 and 66 - I'll fix it.

How about the fact that we have beaten them in our last two meetings. I think we can call that a two game winning streak. There aren't two many teams that we can say that about right now...41-18 in '05 in the dome, and 31-18 in '06 in East Lansing. Let's keep it going...
