I've got the inside information on this one.
You know how when you're pondering something for a long time you all of a sudden have this moment of clarity where you see things as how they truly are? Or maybe more on point, how when you have this little nagging feeling that something's just not right, this liittle bit of angst and you're not quite sure where it comes from but then it suddenly hits you.
Well apparently, probably because of camp opening, this happened to both of these guys.
They both woke up and all of a sudden this little burst of insight hit them and they both said as if they shared the same brain, "Holy Sh*t, we're in the frikken middle of Wisconsin and our coach is a dick!"
They then went around, and quite innocently I might add because they didn't know what to do with this awakening, they walked around practice asking people, "hey, did you know we're in the middle of Wisconsin and our coach is a dick??" As seniors this was trouble for the coaching staff as their usually way of dealing with this wouldn't work. Generally this obvious realization hits freshmen and sometimes it appears as late as the sophmore year but never as late as seniors. So the usual tactic of having the seniors corral the kids and take them under their wings for some good old fashioned road kill fu**ing and corpse extracating just wasn't going to do the trick. so to stem the negative affect on morale they had no choice but to suspend them.
Honest.
Pleasant was going to be the starting nickle, so he would be missed more then Carter. Plesant was upset last year when he lost his job to Valai and wanted to transfer and had to be convinced to stay, so he may have already mentally checked out. The problem though is that every game Valai runs the risk of knocking himself out, so Pleasant would have played. Carter was going to get passed up by a couple players anyways, mostly to their ability to actually tackle someone instead of the running back escort defense Carter tended to employ. Carter was suspended for the bowl game last year and apparently crappy attitudes run in the family.

Carter would have saw time this year because Maragos is not much better at tackling than Shane. Shane was better in coverage as shown by his 7 pick his sophmore year.
Aubrey had his best season as a Badger last year and was pushing Jay Valai for playing time this year. It would have been interesting if he improved on last year. No underclassmen were slated to play as safeties this year.
While Pleasant was pushing Valai, it was only on paper. Valai was going to start. Carter on the other hand was only going to see special teams at best. His 7 ints are misleading. He was similar to Darren Sharper in terms of most of his INTs came off of over throws or last second throws at the end of games. They were more in the right place then in terms of making a play.
Carter has decent ball skills - he played WR in high school. The problem is, he is one of the worst tacklers you will ever see. When he has to tackle a good RB, Carter is like his personal escort to the end zone. If getting stiff-armed in football is like getting dunked on in basketball, he would be the posterization equivalent of Shawn Bradley. As a one on one tackler, he makes Deion Sanders look like Ray Lewis. To say he plays like he wants to avoid physical contact would be a tremendous understatement.
