Couple of notables:
Looks like Ryan Grant and Spencer Reeves burnt up their Redshirts last year, as they are now listed as Sophmores.

http://www.gophersports.com/SportSe...00&SORT_ORDER=5&Q_SEASON=2010&PRINTABLE_PAGE=

Ryan Grant was a redshirt in 2008, and a redshirt freshman last year.

Spencer Reeves was a grayshirt in 2008, and played in the fall after enrolling in January 2009.

I noticed that Kenny Watkins was listed as having played in the Air Force game, but that must've been an error by the person compiling the participation report.

So who makes the jump? I know many are expecting big things from Hageman, is there anyone else that people are counting on playing a big role next season?

59 Balthazor, Joey -Special teams
92 Dykstra, Kyle DL -special teams
49 Garin, Matt DE -I see a DL Wilhite role from him this year
91 Gregory-McGhee, Kendall -Will probably rotate in similar to Henderson/Onwachi/Jacobs in 09
86 Hageman, Ra'Shede -By some accounts a starter, hope to see goal line duties as well
36 Haviland, Chase -Special teams
57 Hill, Aaron LB -Special teams, interesting though, he was mentioned by Brewster alot last year
94 Jacques, Eric DL -Rotate in like Edwards/Kirksey did this last year
84 Keise, Victor WR -Hope for good things, maybe cracks rotation as season goes on
6 Lewis, Kerry DB -I expect dime or even nickel, special teams for sure

41 Orseske, Dan P -Starter
36 Rengel, Nick FB -backup, special teams, change of speed for Hoese
37 Schneider, Willie FB -special teams
44 Singleton, Brent LB I think he'll play this year, maybe a passing down type
67 Stommes, David DL special teams
28 Watkins, Kenny DB -should see time, good to see he RSd I could have sworn he played Halloween night

67 Stommes, David DL 6-6 210 RFr. Eden Valley, Minn. (Eden Valley-Watkins HS)

is that right? 210 on the DL?

I noticed that Kenny Watkins was listed as having played in the Air Force game, but that must've been an error by the person compiling the participation report.

Didn't Orseke play in 2-3 games last year, and he received a redshirt.

Thanks for the informative response Ole. Looks like the gophs will get a lot of production from the redshirt frosh.

Looks like Rallis got the medical RS as well.

Good

So who makes the jump? I know many are expecting big things from Hageman, is there anyone else that people are counting on playing a big role next season?

Olson and Michel on the OL, Hageman and KGM on DL. Beyond that would be someone making a big step up.

Very Interesting, Onwachi too, either a mistake or medical RS.
Getting Onwuachi back would be a nice boost to the DL, I didn't know he had a shot to get a medical redshirt.

Here is the list of Seniors. Based on past performance, its unlikely we see any of these players receive all conference or get drafted. Not a lot of talent in this group and many could be hard pressed by underclassmen for a starting role. Yet there could be 12-13 starters. Mostly comprised of 2006 Mason recruits sprinkled in with a few JUCO's and transfers. And a lot of by-gones such as Becker, Callender, Fischer, Howard, EJ Jones, McField, McWhirter, Sherrer, and Mike Wey who was injured are not around.

76 Alford, Dominic OL 6-3 336 Sr. Cleveland, Ohio (Shaker Heights)
63 Brinkhaus, Andy OL 6-3 276 Sr. Bloomington, Minn. (Bloomington Jefferson)
18 Buckner, R.J. RB 5-11 202 Sr. Keller, Texas (Harvest Christian Academy)
53 Burris, D.J. OL 6-2 290 Sr. Kenton, Ohio (Kenton)
4 Carpenter, Hayo WR 5-11 174 Sr. Lawndale, Calif. (College of the Canyons ) (Sherman E. Burroughs HS)
73 Carufel, Matt OL 6-5 302 Sr. Forest Lake, Minn. (Notre Dame)
47 Coleman, Ryan LS 6-1 225 Sr. Brookfield, Wis. (Brookfield East)
2 Collado, Ryan CB 5-9 175 Sr. Cincinnati, Ohio (Hills Christian )
37 Ellestad, Eric K 6-3 204 Sr. Brooklyn Park, Minn. (Armstrong)
35 Hoese, Jon FB 6-2 233 Sr. Glencoe, Minn. (Glencoe-Silver Lake)
96 Hughes, Curtis TE 6-4 249 Sr. Chicago, Ill. (Gwendolyn Brooks Prep)
88 McGarry, Collin TE 6-4 235 Sr. Stillwater, Minn. (Stillwater)
14 Ogundipe, Damola DB 5-7 187 Sr. New Brighton, Minn. (Irondale)
93 Onwuachi, Derrick DE 6-5 262 Sr. Newhall, Calif. (College of the Canyons)
9 Pittman, David WR 5-11 190 Sr. Pasadena, Calf. (Pasadena City College)
3 Royston, Kim DB 5-11 193 Sr. Minneapolis, Minn. (Wisconsin)
74 Ruckdashel, Ryan OL 6-5 290 Sr. Apple Valley, Minn. (Eastview)
50 Sveum, Patrick LB 6-1 214 Sr. Rochester, Minn. (Century)
27 Theret, Kyle DB 5-10 193 Sr. Murrieta, Calif. (J.K. Mullen High)
8 Weber, Adam QB 6-3 221 Sr. Shoreview, Minn. (Mounds View)

Just looking over this list, it tells us a lot about the talent challenges this team has had. There is not dominating player in the bunch. Maybe Carufel? That is astonishing to have a SR class with that little talent.

Yeah, except for the 12 players or so that may start or could be "1st line players" (counting Ellestad--who's kicked better than anyone in the last 5 years, and Coleman, the best long-snapper we've had in years):

Does this mean Brewster gets two more years.

Now we are bragging on a class because it has strong long snappers and kickers. That about says it all about this Division II level senior class.

Great point. I'd wager that everyone on the senior list would be stars at a DII school, and they all deserved a shot at playing DI. But you don't build a Big 10 championship team with a roster filled with them.

I think it is huge we get Onwuachi back. DE is the position I'm most concerned about next year, given our rotation approach. We have Wilhite as the only guy I can think of that has any experience there, along with redshirts Hageman, KGM, and Garin. I'm glad we have a functional DE in Onwuachi to give us a little more depth.

I'm also excited about the prospect of having Royston, Carufel and Wills in the program for another year. I think they'll all take a step up from their average play this last year. I think Hayo could have a small role this year as well.

Kyle Theret will continue to be the glue, Weber can hopefully bounce back, Collado and Hoese and Burris and Alford will all be solid role players.

Not really a star in the group, but a lot of role players here that are important to our team. Let's not beat them up too much.

Sounds like there's a chance Alford and/or Burris may be beat out and not play much next year. Same with Onwuachi. Carpenter has shown nothing so no reason to say he's a "1st line player." Some solid players on that list, but no one really jumps out at me as a "top of the line" player (Weber could be, but we'll see about that).

Not a star in the group that was either part of Brewster's first class, or has gone through a coaching change and all the system changes. I think these guys should be complimented on sticking to the program or choosing to transfer into this mess. I love all the youth on this team and I think the stability moving forward will translate to the field.

+1

I think it is safe to say that this group of players did not envision things the way they have turned out when they signed up. I'm proud of this group.

Onwauchi is back next year? Wow, that's great news as our depth at DT is scary and this could allow Jacobs to move inside with more regularity since we've got a vet (Albeit he's no Julius Peppers) to work his DE spot.

Well I for one am not taking a shot at the seniors before they've even hit the field for the spring game. But then you guys are the experts.

This is what I was thinking, too...the depth at DT is scary so I would love the flexibility of Jacobs at DT with Onwuachi at DE. Any chance we can get confirmation on this from someone like a Gopherlady?

For those that will say Onwauchi has done nothing and will be leapfrogged by a younger, more talented Freshman anyway I have this to say.....Barret Moen!

I remember reading an article by Rittenberg from espn that said he expects Royston to break through next year and expects the gophers to have the best set of safeties in the big ten, if this were to happen.
