Nubin Named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week

University of Minnesota running back Jordan Nubin was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week today after his standout performance in the Maroon and Gold’s 27-12 victory against Michigan State on Saturday.

Nubin rushed 40 times for 204 yards and two touchdowns in the Minnesota win. His 204 yards were the most by a Minnesota player since Mohamed Ibrahim ran for 263 yards against Iowa on Nov. 19, 2022. His 204 yards are also the 28th most in program history.

Nubin is the first Minnesota running back with 40 carries in a game since Ibrahim had 41 rushing attempts at Maryland on Oct. 30, 2020, and his 40 carries are tied for the seventh most in program history. His 204 yards marks the 33rd time that a Gopher has rushed for 200 yards or more in a game.

On Saturday, he had four carries of 10 yards or more, which included a career‐long of 19 yards and an 18‐yard touchdown run. Nubin rushed 18 times for 79 yards in the first half and followed with 22 carries for 125 yards and two touchdowns in the second half.

With eight carries for 35 yards in the first quarter, Nubin had already topped his previous career‐highs for rushes (6 vs. Michigan, 10/7/23) and rushing yards (25 vs. Michigan, 10/7/23). He entered the Michigan State contest with 15 career carries for 51 yards.

He is the first Gopher to be named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week since Ibrahim on Nov. 21, 2022.

Fleck called it a "family win" in the post game.

Such a great phrase that I almost don't believe his story about getting 19 in the ACT.

First off: congratulations to Jordan Nubin. What a way to burst onto the scene!

This is the second time in three years we have gone five deep in the RB rotation with success. Says a lot about our RBs. To me, says at least as much about the consistency and strength of our O-Line. Nubin came here as a walk-on DB. Position switch came later. Nubin clearly has earned his stripes as a RB--hard work, dedication, strength training, great team-oriented attitude--but this kind of success can't happen without very solid O-Line play. And the future looks good: we have some great young OL on the team, and some extraordinary OL talent in this year's recruiting class. Same for DL. Gophers will go into the expanded, no-divisions B1G with excellent OL and DL. That's the bedrock of a competitive team.

Unbelievable performance. Crazy statistic of the day is that with that performance Nubin is now our second leading rusher this season!1698683360007.png

Nubin's high usage apparently is national news as it got it's own AP story.

Kent Kitzmann is still the Gold standard in this category.

Kitzmann's day

Reusse: Kitzmann's legend born in one 57-carry game in '77

It was basically three plays — Kitzmann left, Kitzmann right, Kitzmann straight ahead — that the Gophers used for a 21-0 victory over Illinois in 1977.

Kent Kitzmann rushed 57 times — then a national record — for 266 yards against Illinois on Nov. 12, 1977. His linemen started laughing when coaches kept calling plays for him.

The memory of Kent Kitzmann is as a giant fullback moving a pile of tacklers for extra yardage, both for two-time prep state champion Rochester John Marshall and the University of Minnesota. For sure, the tacklers did move, although not through sheer bulk.
"I'm 6-foot-3 and played at around 205," Kitzmann said. "I was a big back for then, but not huge."
Kitzmann's years with the Gophers were 1975 to 1978. The star running back on his arrival was J. Dexter Pride, 6-5, 221, and on his departure, it was the duo of Marion Barber II, 6-3, 226, and Garry White, 6-0, 204 pounds.
Yet, Kitzmann remains the power runner of lore, based primarily on one, phenomenal November afternoon in 1977, when the fullback carried 57 times at Illinois.
The Gophers of that season were a strange bunch. They opened with an unimpressive victory over Western Michigan and were thumped at Ohio State. Then, in back-to-back home games, the Gophers beat UCLA, a team that would go 5-2 in the Pac-8, and Washington, the Pac-8's representative in the Rose Bowl.
They split the next two — losing at Iowa, beating Northwestern — and that brought Michigan to town for the Little Brown Jug game on Oct. 22. The Wolverines were rated No. 1 in the country, yet the temperature for Gophers football was so tepid the crowd was 44,165, 10,000 below capacity."...

Considering our opponent, will Nubin carry another heavy load?

Pretty amazing, honestly. Way to go Jordan.

I didn't realize that IL is last in total defense in the B1G with their new coordinator.

Also, Illinois is last (14th) in rushing yards allowed; 12th in passing yards allowed; 12th in points allowed @27.8/game. No player in the top 25 in TFLs; one guy in top 25 sacks (#19). This is a defense the Gophers should make hay against, if we can get over the Bielema "hex." Illinois does have some offensive weapons, and can score, but the "lights out" defenses of 2022 and 2021 are a distant memory. Go Gophers.
