I think Joel Maturi's legacy at the U hinges on this hire. If he makes a splash like he did with Tubby then people will look very positively about this legacy. If Maturi bungles it up like he did with Brewster then he will have a negative legacy.

So his legacy depends on whether or not he hires Mike Hohensee?

In the long term, Maturi's legacy will be TCF Bank Stadium. If it's a bad hire, the next AD will hire someone else, and it will be another footnote. If he makes a good hire, in the long term, he won't be remembered for hiring him. Most of the names that are being considered are generally considered to be good choices.

Glen Mason started the serious discussion about a new stadium and made it realistic when his golf pal Bill Cooper agreed to brink TCF into the mix.

The President, Bob Bruininks was the only person who really made this happen, and Maturi came along for the ride. Joel Maturi in no meaningful way was the catylist or driving force behind getting that stadium built.

What Maturdi is responsible for is killing all momentum and excitement related to a new stadium; a wave that should have lasted for at least 3 more years.

IMO his legacy is already set, he's a spineless pencil pushing non revenue sport BADGER LOVING cheerleader that was completely incompetent but somehow fell into hiring a big time basketball coach and then was given the opportunity to hire yet another football coach after he had failed at every decision previous. If he hires a winner next it will still be the asterisk to a horrible career here.

Other than that he's great.:)

Not to mention Tubby basically falling into his lap...

Joel Maturi's Positive Legacy:

1. Fixing the complete mess that existed in the U's Athletics Department when Maturi was hired.
2. The fantastic design of the Gopher's Football Stadium.
3. Only Penn State in the Big 10 has won more National Championships since Maturi was hired.
4. The hiring of Tubby Smith. Any GopherHoler who thinks that the Gophers were Tubby's dream job are morons. Tubby would have been hired for almost every DI opening in the country. Tubby had to be persuaded to come to the U and Maturi deserves most of the credit.
5. The new football coach is going to be huge and Maturi will deserve much of the credit.

Joel Maturi's Negative Legacy:

1. Tim Brewster

If Maturi gets the right football coach, his legacy will be a very positive one at the U. If he gets another Tubby like hire, I think people will be very positively on his time at the U. If they get things rolling on the baseball stadium then that will only enhance his legacy even more.

I'm on the fence when it comes to Joel about being a good or bad AD. The new football coach and if he can get the baseball stadium going will factor into my final decision. Plus the basketball team winning the national championship this year will force Joel in making another hire. We all know Tubby will be gone after that happens.
