Iowa article on Floyd

The article was ok, some of the commenters had curious perspectives. Anyone who doesn't understand that beating your rival can make even a bad season feel good doesn't understand a thing about college football.

The people who say how pathetic it is are usually the first to celebrate when they've gotten the trophy back...

John Smith hammered it home. Can't believe a Jerkeye actually posted the following:

Well, we like to think we own the Gophers, but it’s really not true. In the recent past, we’ve been about as good as we’ve ever been, and they’ve been as bad as ever. But the last 5 years, the Gophers are actually 2-3 against us. And they’ve won 5 versus our 8 since 1998, despite our overall record being about 30 wins more during that time. And the series is 40-34-2 in their favor all-time.

The key to a good rivalry is to respect your opponent and know your history. Otherwise we look stupid when we’re bragging about stomping them.

If Floyd matters so little to them, we could retire the trophy, and keep it permanently in Minneapolis. But I doubt that would actually appeal to them, sour grapes only goes so far.

Or we could just stick it in a storage closet in the football complex for the next 30 years, dig it out, and claim it as ours forever.

Iowa fans can say what they want about Floyd, but Gopher fans don't make the newspapers when they are caught screwing in a bathroom stall.

This speaks to the uniqueness of rivalry games in general.

No matter how good or bad a team is that year, all bets are off for a rivalry game.
