Ibrahim Named Semifinalist for Comeback Player of the Year Award

University of Minnesota running back Mohamed Ibrahim was named a semifinalist for the 2022 Comeback Player of the Year Award today. The award is presented annually by the College Sports Communicators in association with The Associate Press and the Fiesta Bowl Organization.

Ibrahim is one of 15 semifinalists and the award recognizes college football student-athletes from all divisions of college football for overcoming injury, illness, or other circumstances. In a vote by a panel of AP writers, editors, sports information directors, and Fiesta Bowl Organization representatives, three college football student-athletes will be honored as 2022 Comeback Player of the Year Award winners.

Ibrahim suffered a season-ending injury in the first game of the 2021 season. He was gashing the Ohio State defense – 30 carries for 163 yards and two touchdowns against the Buckeyes – before leaving the game in the third quarter with a devastating injury that would sideline him for the rest of the season.

After surgery and months of rehab, Ibrahim returned for the 2022 season and put up All-American numbers. He rushed 304 times for 1,594 yards and 19 touchdowns in 11 games en route to being named First Team All-Big Ten. According to Pro Football Focus, Ibrahim led the nation in yards after contact with 1,065 and he averaged 144.9 yards per game.

Ibrahim is one of the best ever to wear the Maroon and Gold. In 40 career games, he has rushed 851 times (fourth in school history) for 4,597 yards (second in school history) and 52 touchdowns (school record).

I know nothing about the rest of these guys, but how can Mo not win this???? Think of how many people said a RB can't come back from an achilles injury and he went out there and had some of the best RB stats in the country.

Agree - Very few guys have come back from this type of injury and Mo has by far come back as close to his old form as anyone ever has. Achilles used to be a death sentence - praise to modern medicine and I am guessing relentless work by Mo.
 

The frontrunner for sure.

Calling Mo's injury a knee injury concerns me. This coming from the place that gives out the award.

Yeah, not that a knee injury is nothing but coming back from an Achilles injury and doing what he did is way more impressive.

They listed a top 4 with some background on each. Based on that it would seem like Ibrahim or Penix Jr. would be the front runners. Knew Penix had a number of injuries but didn't realize he had suffered 3 season ending injuries in his career.

Obviously we are biased but Mo should absolutely win this award if those are the top 4 candidates. I say that not knowing the stories of the other 11 guys though.

Has anyone officially confirmed what his injury is/was? We all assume, me included, that he ruptured his Achilles tendon but I know I never officially heard that.

It definitely was ruptured Achilles, they reported that and on the replay you could see it pop. Gruesome for sure.

I imagine there is a nomination form or application package for the award, so hopefully PJ and/or Mo would spell it out in there.

Confirmation would come later, but the television images were clear. Ibrahim had ruptured his Achilles tendon. “It felt like I was living a nightmare,” he continued in the social media video announcement of his return for this 2022 campaign.

He also was wearing a boot and not a knee brace, so at the very minimum it was a foot injury and with the video replay it was quite obvious. I was at the game and knew at the stadium that that is what happened...
 



This award is a joke if Mo doesn't win it.
 

I would think he’s got to the among the favorites, although I don’t know much about the other people
