Clinging to a slim one-point lead in the Big Ten entering the weekend, the Gophers didn’t have much room for error. Unfortunately, not much went right for Minnesota on Thursday as they dropped the series opener, 6-2, to the Michigan Wolverines.

Not A Route

Despite the extremely lopsided score, the game was played fairly close for much of the contest. Six of the game’s eight goals came in the final nine minutes of play.

“It doesn’t matter if it’s a 3-2 game or a 6-2 game; when you lose, you lose,” said Don Lucia. “Through two periods we were kind of where we wanted to be other than we didn’t do much offensively tonight. We didn’t have much flow to our game.”

Disastrous Third

Trailing 2-0 after two periods, the Gophers still had a chance to rally in the final 20 minutes. Once Michigan scored on the powerplay to take a three-goal lead, the flood gates opened. The Wolverines poured on three more goals over the next six minutes to take a 6-0 advantage.

“That’s on us,” said Steve Johnson. “Eric Schierhorn’s been battling his butt off for us all season long. To just give up like that, so to speak, is unacceptable. They’re a great third period team and we knew that going in. For them to put up four goals in the third period is unacceptable.”

The final period was disappointing, to say the very least, for the Gophers.

“We knew they could score in bunches and they’re a third period team,” said Reilly. “Obviously we gave up four and we can’t do that ever.”

Series Finale

Tomorrow, the Gophers will look to once again sit atop the Big Ten standings.

“Tomorrow is obviously the biggest game of the year,” said Johnson. “If we get a win tomorrow, we can put this Thursday night behind us and still be in the (Big Ten) lead.”

Three Stars

3 – Kyle Connor scored two goals including the eventual game-winner.

2 – JT Compher added two assists.

1 – Alex Kile recorded the hat trick against the Gophers.

What’s Next

The Gophers will look to earn the series split and retake the Big Ten lead tomorrow evening. Puck drop is set for 8 p.m.
