Amanda Leveille made a career-best 34 saves against Wisconsin Friday

WCHA Release

Sophomore goaltender Amanda Leveille (Kingston, Ont.) has been named this week's WCHA Defensive Player of the Week. Leveille made 61 saves to lead No. 1 Minnesota to a sweep of No. 4 Wisconsin last weekend.

Leveille allowed just one goal against the Badgers, stopping 61 of 62 shots for a .984 save percentage in the series. She earned her first shutout of the season as she and the Gophers improved to 4-0-0 on the year.

Leveille made a career-high 34 saves in Friday’s 2-1 win, including stopping eight of nine shots by the Badgers on four power-play opportunities. Wisconsin outshot Minnesota, 35-23, but Leveille backstopped the Gophers to the 2-1 win.

Leveille followed-up Friday’s performance with a 27-save shutout in the Gophers’ 2-0 victory on Saturday. She made 22 saves over the first two periods, and the teams entered the third period locked in a scoreless tie. Leveille stopped five more shots in the final frame and the Gophers scored twice, as Leveille earned her first shutout of the season and fourth of her career.

After allowing the lone UW goal of the series at 11:03 of the first period Friday, Leveille put up 108:57 shutout minutes.

Leveille leads the WCHA with a .955 save percentage (fourth in the nation) and a 1.25 goals against average (fifth in the nation). She is also the league’s only goaltender with a perfect 1.000 winning percentage.

This week's award marks Leveille's first WCHA Defensive Player of the Week honor. She was named WCHA Rookie of the Week last season after recording a shutout win over St. Cloud State on Feb. 26, 2013. Leveille is the second Gopher to earn WCHA weekly accolades this season as junior Rachael Bona was named Offensive Player of the Week last week.

The Gophers (4-0-0, 2-0-0 WCHA) travel north to face No. 7 Minnesota Duluth (2-1-1, 0-1-1-0 WCHA) this weekend. Puck drop is set for 6:07 p.m. Friday and Saturday nights at AMSOIL Arena.
