Since the Ms. Hockey Award began in 1996, the Gophers have signed 14 of the 18 award winners.
Future University of Minnesota women’s hockey player Dani Cameranesi was crowned the 2013 Minnesota Ms. Hockey Sunday afternoon at the St. Paul RiverCentre. Cameranesi is the 14th Golden Gopher to receive the award since it began in 1996.
The senior forward, who had 97 points (57g-40a) on the year, helped The Blake School win their fourth Class A State Championship this past Saturday with a 7-2 win over Warroad. She tallied one goal and an assist in the Bears victory.
“Dani is a fantastic player but even better person,” said Gopher head coach Brad Frost. “She will join a great group of past Ms. Hockey winners within the Gopher program.”
Cameranesi tallied at least one point in every game this season, and owns 23 multi-point and 19 multi-goal games on the year. She has notched 12 hat tricks and 10 games with five or more points. Cameranesi has not been held without a point since Feb. 4, 2012.
“Dani is the most impactful player I have coached in my 15 years of coaching at all levels from youth to college hockey,” Blake head coach Shawn Reid said. “No player is as dominant as she has been every game this year. Every game she is surrounded by two or three opponents and yet she is able to maneuver around them with her speed, skill and strength to score goals or set up teammates.”
She also earned Class A All-Tournament Team honors for recording seven points (3g-4a) during the 2013 State Tournament. In the semifinals game against Red Wing, she posted four points (2g-2a) to knock out fellow future Gopher Paige Haley and her club.
The captain of the silver medal-winning U.S. Women’s National Under-18 Team at the IIHF World U18 Championship, Cameranesi is the 14th Gopher to receive the prestigious honor. Currently, there are three former Ms. Hockey award winners on the Maroon & Gold roster in Hannah Brandt (2012), Bethany Brausen (2010) and Becky Kortum (2009).
The other finalists for Ms. Hockey were forwards Kate Flug of Roseville and Kate Schipper of Breck, and defenseman Paige Haley of Red Wing and Sidney Morin of Minnetonka. Flug, Schipper and Haley have all signed to play with the Gophers next season.
“We are also very proud of the other future Gophers that were recognized for this prestigious honor,” Frost said. “We are excited to have them all here next season.”
