Five current and former University of Minnesota women’s hockey players made the United States National Team roster, announced today by USA Hockey. Megan Bozek, Amanda Kessel, Gigi Marvin, Anne Schleper and Lee Stecklein will compete with Team USA as they prepare for the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia. In all, 25 players were named to the team, while 21 advance as a member of the U.S. Olympic Team and a chance at a gold medal.
Megan Bozek capped off her Golden Gopher career by becoming Minnesota’s all-time scoring defenseman with 146 points (47g-99a). The Buffalo Grove, Ill. native was a Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award Top-3 Finalist and First Team All-American.
Amanda Kessel is coming off one of the most historic seasons in the history of women’s hockey history as she was named not only the Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award winner but also the Bob Allen Women’s Player of the Year, which goes annually to the best American-born women’s hockey player. The Madison, Wis. native aided the Gophers in repeating as National Champions by leading the nation in scoring with 101 points (46g-55a) to become only the fourth player in NCAA history to reach the century mark.
Gigi Marvin is the lone Gopher to have already represented the Maroon & Gold in Olympic competition with being on the roster in for the 2010 Winter Games. The 2009 graduate was an All-American in 2008 and sits seventh in program history in scoring with 195 points.
Anne Schleper helped the Gophers win the 2012 National Championship as a defenseman who notched 28 points (5g-23a). The St. Cloud, Minn. native played in 159 games at Minnesota and was an All-American in 2010.
Lee Stecklein is coming off her freshman season at Minnesota where she appeared in 41 games and tallied 12 points (3g-9a). The Roseville, Minn. native is the third youngest player on the roster.
Kessel and Stecklein will redshirt the upcoming season to train with the USWNT.
