Led by redshirt freshman quarterback Athan Kaliakmanis, Minnesota traveled to Camp Randall Stadium and ruined Wisconsin’s senior day and took the luster off Jim Leonhard’s seven-game résumé as interim head coach by rallying for 10 fourth-quarter points and a 23-16 victory.

Kaliakmanis, replacing injured starter Tanner Morgan for the third consecutive week, capped the comeback with a 45-yard touchdown pass with 3 minutes 40 seconds remaining.

"When you lose the axe, it is devastating," senior offensive lineman Tyler Beach said. "It is a hard loss… It sucks. It hurts everyone.

"I know for a fact that this team, next year, will do everything in their power to win. I’ll be excited because this game hurts for 365 days."..

Wolf drove UW to the Gophers’ 5 but consecutive penalties – holding on right tackle Riley Mahlman and a false start on left guard Tanor Bortolini – left the Badgers facing first and goal from the 20 with 21 seconds left.

After an incompletion, a false-start penalty on Beach pushed the ball back to the 25.

Brutal.

Another false-penalty, this time on Mahlman, pushed the ball back to the 30.

After an incompletion left UW facing third and goal from the 30 with nine seconds left, Wolf hit Skyler Bell for 5 yards.

Minnesota called a timeout with five seconds left, with UW facing fourth and goal from the 25. Wolf threw into the end zone but the pass was incomplete and the Gophers had their second consecutive victory in the rivalry..

Wisconsin finishes below .500 in Big Ten

The Badgers (6-6, 4-5 Big Ten) failed to record at least seven regular-season victories – in a full season -- for the first time since 2001.

They finished below .500 in league play for the first time since 2008.

And, they suffered back-to-back losses to the Gophers (8-4, 5-4) for the first time since 1993 and 1994

UW also slipped to 4-3 under Leonhard, who is still expected to be named full-time head coach this week..

That last sentence did not age well at all.
