per ESPN:

In the second week of December 1996, five days after Nebraska lost to Texas in the first Big 12 championship game on the heels of two straight national titles, Frank Solich interviewed for the head-coaching job at Minnesota.

Solich, then the running backs coach under Tom Osborne in Lincoln, had access at the time to privileged information.

He knew that Osborne planned to retire a year later and tap Solich as his successor. So the flirtation ended quickly with the Big Ten program.

The Gophers, within three days of the Solich interview, hired Glen Mason, who had turned down Georgia a year prior and coached 10 years at Minnesota.
