per CBS' Dennis Dodd:

The Gophers have been plucky under Kill, though his record is an even 29-29. He upgraded the talent level. More important, Kill upgraded the competition level. When Big Ten teams came to Minny, they knew they weren't playing a hockey school.

Two years ago, the Gophers won at least eight games for only the third time since 1967. They made a run at a division title.

The Gophers are 4-3 this year, ironically heading into the Michigan game.

This is not a time to ruminate on job candidates, or the eight jobs now open nationally before Week 9.

This is a time to salute a great man who is stepping away not by choice but because of nature.

“I can't afford to have any more seizures,” Kill told me two years ago. “I've had to adjust. I can be like this -- even-keeled -- instead of push, push, push, push, push, push.”

On the podium Wednesday, Kill asked himself, “'Coach, what are you going to do?'"

"I don't know," he answered. "I ain't done anything else."

"I feel like a part of me died.”
