Against Nebraska, without Garcia for the most part, the Gophers ended up with 5 players scoring in double figures led by JOJ with 15. Would have been 6 players if Christie would have made one more free throw as he ended up with 9 points. Love to see that kind of balanced scoring. Hope they repeat that on Saturday. Looking for both Payne and JOJ to have big games in Garcia's absence. We need these guys to step up until Garcia is able to return to play.

I think it also allows the other guys to gain more confidence. We saw that against Nebraska. Garcia is our best player but there a lot of other guys that can lead the team as well.

It's great to have a guy like Garcia that can just take over a game but you don't want the rest of the guys to rely on that.

So while I wish he didn't get hurt, assuming he can come back 100% soon, it might be a blessing in disguise.

Yep....as long as it isn't something that is going to linger this is the perfect time to give him some days off and let the other guys get the valuable experience and playing time between now and the resumption of Big Ten play.

JOJ is the key to everything, if he brings it like he did in the 2nd half against Nebby, we'll be fine.

Would probably be good for Ihnen to see a bunch of time over these next few games as well. Try to get him to the point where he can be a bigger contributor off the bench.

The issue with JOJ has always been whether he can compete and be productive against bigger 4's that he faces. Nebraska isn't a cupcake, but they were not very big either. The more he simply does what he can do rather than trying to play the same way against bigger and better players as he does when he is facing undersized and slower cupcake players, the more productive he can be. He doesn't need to plow through a guy five inches taller than him to help the team. Junkyard stuff is just fine.

Every team needs a nasty junkyard dog. JOJ can bring that to this team.
Whatever Coach Johnson said to him to piss him off at halftime, he needs to say it again before JOJ hits the floor. We need that kind of nasty from him.

If that’s the case, those 7 better play like world beaters.
 


FGCU can cause us some matchup issues as it appears as if their best player Anderson is 6-7 and good from the 3 plus Kellman at 6-8 shooting 67% FG. Carrington on Anderson seems logical but JOJ and/or Ihnen likely on Kellman. Their taller guards can score so Hawkins will be challenged which will be an issue all year. Who will Payne guard as their C only plays 14 mpg?

Could be a big game for Payne if the guards get him the ball.

This is not a gimmee as they only lost to IU by 6.
 

was listening to the "Talk Gopher Buckets" podcast with Luke Buer and Ryan James. James talked quite a bit about JOJ. says he has the potential to be a really good B1G player but he has to bring the same intensity he had in the 2nd half vs Nebraska. According to James, Johnson pulled JOJ out of the game in the 1st half because JOJ was screwing up his defensive assignments and wasn't going to the offensive glass. when JOJ got back in the game, he was a lot more aggressive.

James also said Ihnen has to be more solid on defense.

and he was fairly complimentary about Hawkins. said Hawkins is figuring out how to play at a higher level and can be a leader on the team if he keeps the turnovers in check.
