Carlton Littlejohn??

Walking on when you could get a scholarship somewhere else is a luxury. The great majority of people would have to at least think pretty hard about it before turning down a scholarship. It's not just city kids either, there are an awful lot of people out in rural areas who couldn't afford to turn down a scholarship offer.

There is no question you are right, but kids still do it.

NDSU and SDSU have all lost players to Nebraska's walk on program despite having been offered a scholarship. The point is here that the pride of potentially playing for NE completely overrides the need or desire to have a free education. So the real bottom line is that MN needs to develop such a sense of pride in the in state players so they too would rather play for the Gophers than play at NDSU or elsewhere. Littlejohn, Vraa and Olson would have all made a very good preferred walk on class had Brewster been able to land them.

Yes, some players do choose to walk on at one school when they could have scholarship offers elsewhere. Minnesota does get walk ons. But no school gets all the walkons they might want, not even Nebraska. But asking students to pay out of their own pocket school when they can get it paid for elsewhere is never an easy sell. If you can't afford to pay for college on your own, walking on is a luxury you simply can't afford.
