Remember that none of the non-conference losses affect the Big Ten race unless there is a ranking tie-breaker at the end of the season. However, there have been 3 conference games played already and all resulted in point difference of 4 or less.

Northwester over Nebraska- 31-28
Penn State over Purdue 35-31
Indiana over Illinois 23-20

Conference games are tough and will continue to be the wins that are needed to win the West

September 24:
Minnesota at Michigan State
Iowa at Rutgers
Wisconsin at Ohio State

-----

October 1:
Purdue at Minnesota
Michigan at Iowa
Illinois at Wisconsin

-----

We'll know a lot more after October 1. A lot more.

If the Gophers can win those two games, look out. If that happens, Minnesota would be 2-0 in the conference, with a head-to-head advantage over Purdue — and Purdue would be 0-2 in the B1G, because of their earlier loss to Penn State.

It seems pretty likely that Wisconsin will lose at Ohio State on Sept. 24.

It seems pretty likely that Michigan will beat Iowa on Oct. 1.

Somebody will have to lose the Illinois vs Wisconsin tilt on Oct. 1 (unless they tie), and Illinois is already 0-1 in the B1G with their previous loss to Indiana.

If the Gophers can stay focused and take care of business, they have a very nice opportunity in the next three weeks. We could be running ahead of the field, and looking strong.

I didn't look too deep, but I thought it looked like the first two weeks of conference play will be huge.

Given how things have shaken out to date, the MSU and Purdue games give the Gophers an early chance to control their own destiny in the 2022 season. Go Gophers!

While they don't affect B10 conference standings (unless needed for tiebreakers), they will in theory affect CFP rankings. Although highly unlikely that anybody in the west will be in the playoff, they do use CFP rankings for bowl placement, and if I'm not mistaken, the NY6 bowls are bound to use the CFP rankings for placement. So it may affect bowl placement when it comes down to it.

Ummmmmm

We already control our own destiny?
Referring to the fact that in many seasons, with teams having tight records and the vagaries of head-to-head records, a team’s Bowl destiny is often determined not only by winning, but by the gift of another team’s losing. We put ourselves in a position last year that forced us to rely on another team to lose in order for us to become West champs … and it didn’t happen.

BTN has been putting their daily show B1G Today episodes up on YouTube.
The analysts have a lot of great things to say about MN and their chances in the West.
Here's highlights from today's episode.

Week 2 takeaways:

Praise for Tanner Morgan's growth, becoming a great QB:

Who's the best team in the West? MN of course:

Ummmmmm

We already control our own destiny?
Technically, all B1G teams control their destiny at the beginning of the season!

Win out and your in!

Gophers could easily go into Illinois game the only unbeaten team in the West.

First 4 games: MSU, Pur, Illinois PSU.
Middle Game Rutgers
Last 4 games: Neb., NW, IA, WI

We should be favored in 6-7 of the 9 games.

Hmm…
Right now I’d say we should be underdogs at:
MSU, PSU AND Whisky.
@ Nebraska maybe if the new coach rallies the team

All the rest are pretty much locks for Gophers to be favored.

But if we are unbeaten after MSU and Purdue, we could be favorites the rest of the way!

This is the analysis that keeps us coming back to gopherhole. Conference wins are needed to win the conference.
