Not much new, but have found a few more Big 10 games. Most notably, Northwestern will meet Notre Dame in the semifinals of the Chicago Invitational at the Sears Center in suburban Chicago. In addition, Illinois starts a home-and-home with Western Michigan this year. Rather unusual for a Big 10 team to schedule a home-and-home with a MAC school, I think.

Rumblings and grumblings amongst the Purdue faithful have Purdue playing West Virginia and Alabama this coming season but time and dates are unknown. I doubt they'll play both.

It amazes me how late they settle college basketball schedules. Aren't college football schedules pretty well set several years ahead? Obviously, football is a much bigger production. It's kinda nice basketball has much more flexibility (smaller teams to travel, not locked into Saturdays only), but it still surprises me how much is not set yet.

Interesting neutral-site matchup outside the Big 10

According to Iowa State's web site, the Cyclones will play Duke on Sunday, Jan. 6, at the United Center in Chicago.

Well, it looks like Tubby and Co. have put together (so far) the crappiest NC schedule in the conference. Nice work boys. I just sent in my renewal, but one more year of this and I'm out.

I really like what Beilein is doing at Michigan. He doesn't appear to be ducking tough games, that's for sure. Fans at Crisler certainly shouldn't complain about seeing at least two major-conference opponents.

It's also apparent (thus far) Northwestern and Penn State are making a concerted effort to upgrade their non-league schedules. Will be interesting to see how the final schedule pieces fit together.

edit - I had to edit my original thoughts. I totally spaced off the liklihood of facing some really good teams in Anaheim and there's a good chance we'll have 1-2 quality opponents and possible wins there. So the margin of error isn't as "razor thin" as I first wrote.

That said, it would be nice to get a good OCC home game.

Without having the final schedule in our hands, I'm hopeful that a solid non-conference opponent has been lined up in addition to the Anaheim Classic, the ACC Challenge game, and St. Joe's. However, it seems that the comments made at the golf tournament lead one to believe that there will once again not be a major conference opponent coming to Williams Arena this upcoming season.

If that is indeed the case, I think the first real criticism can be directed towards Tubby Smith as Gophers' coach. While the Anaheim Classic will provide the opportunity for some quality opponents (and hopefully wins), I don't know how good wins against St. Joe's and Miami will look. I agree with what tjgopher has to say-the margin for success is once again razor-thin unless the Gophers prove superior in Big 10 play.

What are the chances the Gophers improve upon last year's Big 10 mark? While the player losses seem neglible and the addition of White, Mbawke, Williams, and Cobb signal an uptick in talent arriving, there are still many question marks surrounding this team. If the Gophers sail through December facing less than daunting opposition (the Anaheim Classic is around Thanksgiving and the Miami game on Dec. 2), will the squad be ready for a Big Ten where almost all the teams look as strong as last season and nine teams harbor realistic aspirations for the NCAA tournament?

And while I'm not a season ticket holder and never have been, I have a great deal of empathy for those Gopher fans. The tickets are not cheap and in these economic times, I'm sure many had difficult decisions to make about renewing their season tickets this upcoming season. Yes, there will be great teams coming to the barn in 2010 when Big 10 play commences, but what about the first couple months of the season? And with whispers of increased ticket prices coming to fund the new practice facility, one can ask where's the payoff for their money spent?

Finally, we have a marquee coach in Tubby Smith, we deserve a marquee schedule in addition. I reluctantly went along with last year's argument that the schedule was weak so as to allow the team to gel; this year, any excuse will ring hollow. When looking at virtually any other schedule in the Big Ten, you see solid national programs lined up to play against those respective teams. While the Anaheim Classic is a great tournament to be involved in, Minnesota's participation will likely get lost in the blitz of Thanksgiving tournaments, unless they win the damn thing. We're supposedly hot on the trail of national recruits like Harrison Barnes, Cory Joseph, Jelan Kedrick, etc. It's time to step up the schedule if there are hopes in attracting those types of players.

I hope I look foolish in the next day or so when it's announced that the Gophers will be facing a Washington or Tennessee or Georgetown next season, I would welcome the egg on my face.

Coolhand, I know you're only using Washington, Tennessee and Georgetown as examples, but for sh*ts & giggles I can definitively say Washington is a "no" on the Gophers' schedule. Georgetown and Tennessee have yet to release their nonconference schedules.

Based on recent history I don't know why I'm still holding out hope for another quality home game (assuming Saint Joe's is coming), but I know these notable schools have released their non-league schedules and the Gophers are nowhere to be found:

Arizona
George Mason
Kansas
K-State
Nebraska
Oklahoma State
Texas Tech
UNLV
Utah
Washington

Thanks MNBoiler99. Looks like a decent schedule. A couple home games vs. major programs (Wake & West Va.), a road game at an SEC school, a NCAA qualifier (Northridge), along with a decent tournament, especially if you get Tennessee or even UNI in the finals. Will be interesting to see who the Dec. 19 opponent is.

This is a joke right? How is it so different that MN Schedule. WF will not be nearly as good this year. Alabama is rebuilding. We have West Va too. Tennessee will not be as good next year either. Everyone needs to chill out. Look at other teams' schedule in B10 before complaining. We'll be fine.

No joke intended. Just an opinion. Was simply pointing out that I like the fact Purdue will play (at absolute minimum) 3 teams from major conferences (ACC, Big East, Big 12, Pac 10, SEC).

How is it different than the Gophers' schedule? I don't know. The Gophers' final NC schedule hasn't been released yet.

The Wake Forest game lost it's luster when Jeff Teague jumped to the NBA. He's from Indianapolis so it would've made for a nice story line. Pretty much any BCS conference opponent on the road is tough even if it's a reguilding team like Alabama. I'm not a season ticket holder, but I know plenty of people that are and I'd feel ripped off again this year. You'd think the Tubby factor could get some teams in the Barn but I guess it's not that easy.
