Gophers safety Antoine Winfield Jr. has been named one of five finalists for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy. The award is presented to the nation’s top defensive player. Winfield Jr. has been included among some of the country’s best defenders. He is just the second player in program history to be named a finalist for this award (Tyrone Carter - 1999).
Winfield leads the Big Ten and ranks second nationally with seven interceptions. He is a key catalyst in Minnesota’s defense and continues to show why he is one of the most valuable defensive backs in the country. In ten starts, Winfield has also posted 65 tackles, two sacks, a pass breakup and forced fumble.
The Gophers’ safety joins Derrick Brown (Auburn defensive tackle), J.R. Reed (Georgia safety), Isaiah Simmons (Clemson linebacker) and Chase Young (Ohio State defensive end) as a finalist for the award. Young, Brown and Simmons are all potential top-10 prospects for the 2020 NFL Draft.
After missing part of the past two seasons with injuries, Winfield has started every game in 2019. His awareness, instincts and coverage/tackling skills have allowed the Gophers’ coaching staff to install a variety of unique defensive wrinkles. This is a tremendous honor for Winfield and illustrates the national attention he is starting to receive.
