... when our team loses, we are bombarded with posts decrying our players and coaches. Their sins of omission and commission are laid out as factual rather than opinion. We establish categories of "moron" and "idiot" and "homer" for those who have the temerity to disagree or to venture a contrary opinion.

After a victory, a smaller number come out to sing the praises of the team and to bask in the reflected soft glow of a nice win. But soon enough, the critics reappear to point out how one player isn't consistent or another hasn't shown the anticipated (well, desired) development.

I for one am glad to know that we have a place such as this. After all, this is very important stuff and if we do not come to agreement that so-and-so will never be a success without working on this technique or that -- if we cannot pour over the police blotter to see if anyone's transgressed -- if we cannot watch a fourth-grade travelling team player strut his stuff and get a comprehensive scouting report -- there would be bodies strewn over our neighborhoods of sports fans who died of frustration and other maladies that corrupt the human spirit.

REcent results have proven

that most players need to be given time to develop and enhance skills. There are a number of players, on this team, who were written off well before even having an opportunity to play meaningful minutes.
