All Things Dawson Garcia Recruitment Thread (Class of 2020): UPDATED: Gophers Offered

For some reason I find it interesting when Twin Cities kids cite the U as their "hometown school" in these Tweets. It gives me a feeling they have a deeper connection to the school than others. Looking back at the recent locals we ended up signing shows that affinity; I hope Dawson follows the same pattern as Daniel, Gabe and Jarvis.

Here's Oturu's offer Tweet:

Here's Jarvis':

Gabe didn't Tweet anything out about his offers.

Gabe is my favorite player in the country

per Brian Snow:

Dawson Garcia, PF, D1 Minnesota – Garcia is a unique talent. At 6-foot-9 he can really handle the ball and has a smoothness to his game. Garcia can also make shots out to the three point line, and just shows the ideal versatility for a forward who will play at the high-major level. He isn’t an elite athlete, but he is super skilled and just knows how to put the ball in the basket.

I don't have VIP on24/7 but the headline made it seem like Garcia will visit in the Fall. Official? Maybe an early commit

He'll be officially visiting Texas.
Unofficial can't take officials until January of Junior year. He planned to visit Texas this summer but didn't work out. Also mentions interest with the Gophers continues to build and there has been a lot of contact between the 2 sides. Says Pitino is a good guy and he is excited to continue being recruited by the Gophers.

Garcia just picked up a Wisconsin offer.

per Marcus:

The 6-foot-9 Carlson and 6-10 Garcia are highly skilled posts. They both fit the “stretch four” label with the ability to face the basket, shoot and put the ball on the floor. That caught the attention of Pitino, who offered both scholarships (along with Park Center’s 2020 big man Dain Dainja) on the same day in April.

Garcia, who just received an offer from Wisconsin on Monday, has offers from Baylor, Butler, Iowa, Xavier and Texas among others. He's reportedly scheduled an unofficial visit to see the Longhorns on Sept. 22. The Gophers were able to show him their new facilities when Prior Lake played in the U's team camp last month.

“I have been in a lot more contact with them as of late," Garcia told 247sports.com. "I’ve met all of their assistants, and I have been talking to them a lot. Coach Pitino is a good guy, and I am exciting to keep getting recruited by the Gophers.”

per Bossi:

IN HIS OWN WORDS
In the fall, Garcia will take an unofficial visit to Texas in the latter part of September. He discussed the Longhorns, his home state program, Wisconsin and another program making a recent push, Xavier.

Texas: “I think Shaka Smart is a great coach and has great success. He built up a powerhouse at VCU and then obviously got the big job at Texas and has been doing a great job. Our former player Jericho Sims plays there and he’s said nothing but good things about it and he seems like he’s probably going to be drafted, maybe next year.”

Minnesota: “Their team camp was great and had a lot of great competition. I’ve been in a lot more contact with them as of late. I’ve met all of their assistants and been talking to them a lot. (Richard) Pitino is a great guy and their new facility is sweet so I’m excited to continue getting recruited by the Gophers.”

Wisconsin: “They’ve been texting me and my dad here and there and telling me that I’ve played well. I don’t know, we’ll see what happens."

Xavier: “Coach (Ben) Johnson has kind of been the same since he was with the Gophers now that he’s at Xavier. He’s always been a great guy to me and helped lead me in the right direction. Coach (Travis) Steele has also been keeping in contact with me a lot lately and they are good guys over there.”

So is Pitino a good guy or a great guy? That may be the difference between getting Garcia or not.

BTW, I was amused by his "meh" answer on Wisconsin. Sounds like they're getting in late in the relationship game.

Dawson on Wisconsin: " I don’t know, we’ll see what happens" LOL.

Can’t wait for a recruit like him to just say yes. Oturo gave us an early commit. Would love to see another.

Need a good year on the court and theres a very good chance hes a Gopher.

Sign the dotted line Dawson, be a Gopher and make the state proud!

per Evans:

The D1 Minnesota 17-under squad went down in defeat on Saturday evening, shocking many and disappointing others that were hoping that a rematch of last week’s finals between the unit and Compton Magic would play itself out again. However, the program was able to see its 16-under uniform play on through championship Sunday thanks to its super talented front-line.

On Saturday, we highlighted the play of Ben Carlson, one of the best frontcourt prospects in his class nationally. Carlson’s feel for the game in the low and high post area, ability to shoot the perimeter jumper and also defend his basket is evident. He will visit Nebraska, Iowa State and Creighton next month. Stanford, Northwestern, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Indiana, and Ohio State are just a few that have already offered.

The perfect pairing in the frontcourt alongside Carlson is Dawson Garcia, a southpaw with sneaky edges of toughness that he uses in producing through physicality. The lefty can also shoot the perimeter jumper as he is most comfortable playing facing the basket out of the high post region as he can dribble, shoot, pass and defend. He is a strong top-50 prospect that will take a visit to Texas in September as he carries 10 offers, ones coming from a group that includes Minnesota, Wisconsin, Butler and Xavier.

Man, the talent in this state right now is crazy. Need to start adding some it to the hometown roster.

I agree. Between the Gopher coaches, players and high school coaches let’s hope we can score a few of these gems by talking and showing action they need to be part of this growing program
